Steven Ford Brown is an American writer currently living in Barcelona, Spain. His literary work includes essays, music criticism and reviews, and interviews with notable authors and musicians. He is the Founder and Senior Editor of The Official Tomas Tranströmer Website, the 2011 Nobel Prize Laureate for Literature from Sweden. He has published anthologies of contemporary poetry, as well as book translations from the Spanish of writers from Bolivia, Canary Islands, Ecuador, and Spain.
Biography[edit]
Of French and Scottish descent, Steven Ford Brown is an American writer born September 11, 1952, in Florence, Alabama. He is an editor, journalist, music critic, and translator of Spanish poetry. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts in 1988. He completed his B. A degree in English and Literature at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and also studied at the University of Houston, and Harvard University's Extension School.
Brown worked at Harvard University, and for a decade in Administration in the European Department of a private investment firm in Boston's Financial District. In 2006 he resigned to work as an editor and writer in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Paris, France, and Barcelona, Spain.
Literary career[edit]
He is founder and senior editor of The Lion Publishing Group, a nonprofit media organization. The primary global presence of the Company is two websites dedicated to the remarkable lives and literary books of internationally recognized writers. The first two websites are of Nobel Laureate poet Tomas Tranströmer of Sweden, and poet Jorge Carrera Andrade of Ecuador.
Brown's literary body of work includes translations from the Spanish of poets Nicomedes Suárez Araúz (Bolivia), Jorge Carrera Andrade (Ecuador), Ana Maria Fagundo (The Canary Islands, Spain) and Ángel González (Spain). He edited two special issues of the Atlanta Review: After Paz and Neruda: 14 New Poets of Latin America (2003), and 16 Modern Poets of Spain from Basque Country, Castile, Catalonia, and Galicia (2004).
He has also contributed essays, interviews, poetry, and translations to The Christian Science Monitor, Harvard Review, Poetry, Rolling Stone, and Jacket Literary Magazine (Australia). His translations of Jorge Carrera Andrade were featured in the United Kingdom on the BBC Radio 4 program The Verb, a weekly show devoted to international literary news and readings. Invited Guest: An Anthology of Twentieth-Century Southern Poetry (University of Virginia Press 2002) was named as one of The Best Books of The Year from a University Press by the American Library Association and the American Association of University Professors, and featured on C-Span's Booknotes TV program.
From Amsterdam to Stockholm[edit]
A meeting in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2010 between Steven Ford Brown and Tom Jönsthövel, a Dutch friend from Amsterdam, Netherlands, resulted in plans for a music video of a prose poem by Swedish poet Tomas Tranströmer for posting on YouTube. The production took place two months later in Amsterdam. The filmed reading of The Blue House, a prose poem by Tranströmer, by Dutch actress and singer Louise Korthals was completed in a day. Jönsthövel edited the resulting raw film footage and composed the background music. The completed video was posted to YouTube on December 14, 2011.
