Dr KAÁLI NAGY Géza István (Gyula, 19 January 1943), known in the US as Steven G. KAALI, MD, is a gynaecologist–obstetrician with Hungarian and American citizenship, a clinical professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the inventor of the optical trocar, and the founder of the Kaali Institute in Hungary. His work has been awarded numerous times in Hungary and in the US.

Life and career[edit]

Dr Kaáli was born on 19 January 1943 as the first child of OROSZ Anna and senior ophthalmologist Dr KAÁLI NAGY Sándor. His younger brother became an architect and his sister a lawyer.

He studied at the Táncsics Mihály Secondary Grammar School in Orosháza, and after that, he received his medical degree at the Medical University of Szeged in 1968.

In 1969, Dr Kaáli and his brother emigrated to the United States, and in 1976, he became an obstetrics–gynaecology specialist at the teaching hospital of Cornell University.

Between 1976 and 1983, he worked as a specialist and instructor at Columbia University in the City of New York.

In 1983, he was invited to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he was appointed a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynaecology in 2002.

In addition to his work in the US, in 1992, he established the Kaali Institute, an institute for assisted reproduction in Budapest, and he has been its CEO from the start. Today, there is a network of Kaali Institutes in Hungary, which have assisted the conception of over 25,000 babies.

Dr Kaáli is the most generous donor of his former secondary school. His foundations provided scholarships to the US for students at the Medical University of Szeged and for OB–GYN specialists.

He has been residing in Budapest since 2014.

Scientific work[edit]

His areas of research are endoscopy and assisted reproduction. He has authored a number of scientific papers in English and Hungarian. His research results have been presented as lectures or posters at prestigious international conferences. He has obtained 11 US patents, 6 of which have been bought by the company Johnson and Johnson. He has donated the other 5 to Cornell University.

His most significant single-author paper is: Introduction of the Opti-trocar. (J Am Assoc Gynecol Laparosc. 1993 Nov;1(1):50-3.), his related patent: Visually directed trocar for laparoscopic surgical procedures and method of using same. United States Patent, Kaali, Patent number: 5,334,150. Date of Patent: Aug. 2, 1994.

In 2000, as the President of APART (Association of Private Assisted Reproductive Technology Clinics and Laboratories), he organized a world congress in Budapest, with 60 countries in attendance.

He is the editor of the “A meddőség korszerű diagnosztikája és kezelése” [Modern diagnostics and treatment of infertility] textbooks that were published as two editions, in 2006 and 2018.

In recognition of his work as a prominent Hungarian scientist living abroad, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences accepted him as a member of its public body in 2001.

His efforts in creating a national network of IVF clinics and in the internationally recognised operation of this network, the service of childless Hungarian couples, and his significant work to improve the demographic situation, as well as education, training, adult education, and scientific research in Hungary have been recognised with several prestigious state awards. In recognition of his work in obstetrics and gynaecology, which has created a new school of thought, the Board of the Hungarian Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology presented him with the Semmelweis Award.

Personal life[edit]

Dr Kaáli is married and has three adult children.

He is a keen athlete, he loves catamaran racing and swimming.
