Overview

Steven Satterfield is an American chef, cookbook author and restaurateur.  He is the executive chef and co-owner of Miller Union, an award-winning, seasonal restaurant located in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2015, Satterfield released his first cookbook, Root to Leaf: A Southern Chef Cooks Through the Seasons, to broad critical acclaim, followed by Short Stack Editions Vol. 26, Peanuts. In 2017, after four previous nominations, Satterfield was named “Best Chef: Southeast” by the James Beard Foundation. Satterfield remains deeply committed to Atlanta’s progressive culinary community and holds leadership position with Chef’s Collaborative and Slow Food Atlanta.  He is also an active member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Georgia Organics. Satterfield’s dedication to seasonal cooking and his unwavering support for local farmers is the driving philosophy behind his restaurant. He has been a strong advocate for fighting food waste and leads workshops and talks on the topic for both food professionals and consumers.

Background

In 1987, Steven Satterfield moved from Savannah, Georgia, to Atlanta to study architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology.  Disillusioned with computer-aided design after graduating, he took a career turn and began to play in various up-and-coming indie rock bands including founding the group, Seely. As a way of supplementing his income, he cooked in kitchens around the city of Atlanta. It wasn’t long before Satterfield left both architecture and his successful musical career behind to pursue this new passion in food. Satterfield worked his way into beloved Atlanta restaurants, Floataway Café under chef Anne Quatrano, and Watershed under chef Scott Peacock, where he established a profound affinity for cooking seasonal vegetables. From there, Satterfield departed Watershed to open Miller Union in 2009 with current business partner, Neal McCarthy.
