Steven Swadling (born 7 May 1969) is a British actor, Producer and screenwriter. He played Joseph King in the reboot of the 1989 classic Kickboxer, Kickboxer: Vengeance (2016) and Kickboxer: Retaliation (2018). Swadling also played Peter in Melora Walters directorial debut film Waterlily Jaguar and shares the executive producing card with Paul Thomas Anderson..[1]

Early life[edit]

Steven was born in Shoreham-By-Sea, and grew up in Lancing, a neighboring village in the south of England[2]. During his early education he attended Boundstone, well known for its music and drama productions at that time. Steven was drawn to the stage at an early age, heavily influenced by Richard Burton, and was steadfast in his pursuit an acting career at a very early age. He joined the Connaught theatre group in 1983 and wrote a stage musical production that was later entered into the Chichester Festival Theatre in Chichester Sussex. He visited Orange County, California just outside of Los Angeles in 1985 to study martial arts then returned to England. In 1987 Steven returned to the US and earned his Black Belt in Japan Karate-Do Ryobu-Kai under sensei Kioshi Yamazaki. He used his training and fight coordination as a segue into film[3]. He studied at the Van Mar Academy of Motion picture and later at Sanford Meisner's Playhouse West, founded by Robert Carnegie and Jeff Goldblum.

In late 1996, Steven stepped away from the industry to raise a family and also build a foundation for his businesses[4]. His entrepreneurial abilities helped him form several businesses that include a full-service advertising agency and a film production company, Room In The Sky Films.

Film Career[edit]

After establishing his place back in the film industry, Steven's breakthrough came with his role of Joseph King in Kickboxer: Vengeance (2016) starring former world champion Dave Bautista from Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), Alain Moussi, Gina Carano and world renowned, Jean-Claude Van Damme. Steven served as an executive producer[5] for the franchise reboot of the Kickboxer (1989 film) classic while holding the recurring role of Joseph King.

Steven went on to executive produce[6] the second installment of the trilogy Kickboxer: Retaliation (2017) again starring Alain Moussi and Jean-Claude Van Damme with the additions of Christopher Lambert[7] Mike Tyson[8] and several other world champions in the sporting world including Ronaldinho Gaúcho's[9] acting debut. Steven again reprised his role as Joseph King.

In 2016 Steven executive produced and played Detective Fripp in Point Defiance (2017)[10] and immediately followed with Waterlily Jaguar (2018) directed by Melora Walters. The film stars James Le Gros, Academy Award Winner Mira Sorvino, Dominic Monaghan, Stacey Oristano and Christopher Backus. Steven also plays Bill's (Dominic's character) business partner, Peter in the film.

Steven co-starred in DOE as Hayes[11], a psychosomatic thriller starring Timothy Davis, Tatyana Ali, Mathew St. Patrick and Mira Sorvino, his second time working with the Academy Award Winner.

In 2017 Steven executive produced a horror film titled We Still Say Grace starring Bruce Davison, Holly Taylor, and Rita Volk.

In 2018 he played a suspicious Ranger in The Clearing[12] alongside Liam McIntyre "Spartacus", and Sydell Noel "GLOW".

In 2019 Steven again teamed up with Melora Walters in her second directorial feature, "Drowning" starring Melora Walters, Gill Bellows, Mira Sorvino, and Jay Mohr. Steven plays Giovanni in the film and is the third time working with Mira Sorvino. Steven is set to executive produce and reprise Joseph King in the final installment of the trilogy, Kickboxer: Armageddon (2019)[13]
