Still Falling is a Greek progressive death metal band from Athens, formed in 2009.[1][2] The band has released one studio album, Free of Avidya (2016), as well as several EPs and singles, most recently the concept EP Through Time and Flesh (2025).[3]
History
Formation and early releases (2009–2014)
Still Falling formed in Athens in 2009.[1][2] The band issued the EP Counterfeit Existence in March 2012, followed by the EP The Three Suns on 17 September 2013.[4] The stand-alone single "Mercury" was released on 20 November 2014.[5]
Free of Avidya (2016)
The band's debut full-length album, Free of Avidya, was self-released on CD and digitally on 16 July 2016.[6] It contains ten tracks, two of them instrumental.[6]
Reviewing the album for the Greek webzine Rockway.gr, Stefanos Stefanopoulos praised its production and the intensity of its songwriting, and suggested the record reflected well on the Greek extreme metal scene as a whole.[7] Progrocks.gr described the band, then a quintet, as a technical/progressive death metal act drawing on Gojira and the djent of Meshuggah, and characterised the album as combining more direct death metal songs with more complex compositions built on rhythmic shifts.[2]
Hiatus and "Release the Two Ends" (2016–2024)
Following Free of Avidya, the band stepped away from live activity for several years, returning in 2023 with the single "Release the Two Ends".[8] The single was released on 7 July 2023; according to the band, it was composed and produced using improvisation, field recordings and ambisonics.[9]
Through Time and Flesh (2025)
On 7 February 2025 the band independently released Through Time and Flesh, a four-track concept EP that the band describes as its sixth release.[3] Running approximately 20 minutes, it is structured in four "acts" and addresses humanity's relationship with the divine from a first-person perspective.[3] The EP was produced and mixed by John Mor at Apex Soundworks; guitars and bass were recorded by Mike Meleteas at Bombtrack Studios and vocals by Giannis Pratikakis at Groove Studios, with artwork by NuktiMedusa.[3]
In a 4.5/5 review for Metal-Rules.com, Simon Wiedemann remarked on the number of ideas packed into the EP's short running time and highlighted the eight-string guitar riffing of the closing track, while noting that he occasionally wished for more variation in mood or pace.[1] Writing for Metalourgio, Costas Koulis described the opening track as cinematic, mixing doom and progressive elements.[8]
Live performances and media
According to Metal-Rules.com, the band's career has included reviews in Terror Magazine and Metal Hammer, radio interviews and an appearance on Greek television, and the band has shared the stage with acts including Opeth, Nile and Anaal Nathrakh.[1]
Musical style
Still Falling's music has been described as atmospheric and progressive death metal.[1] Progrocks.gr compared the band's technical approach to Gojira and Meshuggah,[2] while Metalourgio noted cinematic and doom-influenced passages on Through Time and Flesh.[8]
