History

The department was established as a fully paid department in 1888 after 38 years of volunteer service. Stockton was selected as one of the first Class 1 Fire Departments. Then in the 1980's Stockton became a Class 1 city. Unfortunately in 2011 the city of Stockton declared bankruptcy which caused Engine Co. 1 and Truck Co. 4 to close as well as staffing reductions which laid off 36 firefighters and the reduction of 4 man engines to 3 man engines and 5 man trucks to 4 man trucks. They lost both Class 1 City and Class 1 Fire Department. Most likely Stockton wont be a Class 1 city anytime soon due to that requiring more stations, equipment, and staffing. As of 2020 their staffing is equivalent to the 1970's that served a population of about 100,000. Since then, the city has grown by about 252,000 more citizens. Even with these major cuts they continue to be one of the most aggressive firefighting departments in the nation. In 1976 Stockton Fire contracted with Lincoln Fire District which added 15.4 square miles and the Eastside Fire Protection District, also in 1984 adding the Tuxedo-Country Club Fire Districts. And in 1992 Stockton agreed to also provide contract service to the Boggs Tract Fire Protection District.
