Ströme are a German electronic music duo consisting of the two studied musicians Mario Schönhofer and Tobias Weber.[1] Central to their musical performance are analog, modular synthesizer systems.[2]

Music[edit]

Compost Records, Ströme's label, describes their sound as a mix of driving beats, analog synth melodies and live trumpet.[3] The songs on their LP Ströme Nr. 2, released in September 2022, "move effortlessly between raw techno, electro and synth-pop, with one of their sound identities also echoing early Krautrock productions of the 60s and 70s, in the style of Amon Düül, Popol Vuh, Tangerine Dream, Embryo, Guru Guru, Cluster, Eberhard Schoener and Kraftwerk."[4] Among other analog synthesizers, the LP features in particular the sound of the rare Moog IIIp modular synthesizer.[5]

Ströme produce their music with analog modular synthesizers live and by hand without computers or samples. This way, the two musicians constantly reinterpret their songs and combine them with improvisations and spontaneous compositions.[6][7] The analog, modular synthesizer system Doepfer A-100 is the main live equipment of Ströme.[8]

History[edit]

Bassist Mario Schönhofer and drummer Tobias Weber played together in the band LaBrassBanda since 2013. In 2015 they founded their project Ströme and left LaBrassBanda in 2016.

Their debut EP Nr. 1 was released in 2016 via Compost Records.[9]

On their current album, Ströme Nr. 2, they collaborated on three songs with the musician Nick McCarthy.[10] Mario Schönhofer and Tobias Weber met Nick McCarthy in London after a pub concert of LaBrassBanda, of which they were members at the time. Nick McCarthy met Ströme again some time later in Munich. Together they recorded the songs with the original synthesizer Moog IIIp, with which once The Beatles had recorded and which was owned by Eberhard Schoener at that time.[11] In 2019, this synthesizer was handed over to the German Museum in Munich. At the ceremonial handover, Ströme played under the lead of Eberhard Schoener together with an ensemble that included Pete York and George Kochbeck.[12] One of the highly limited replicas of this legendary Moog IIIp is owned by Stöme at Flokati Studios in Munich.[13]

Ströme performed over 170 shows by now.[14] Among them were gigs at festivals like Fusion and in clubs like Sisyphos in Berlin.[15]
