Strateos is a privately owned, software-driven biotechnology company based in Menlo Park, CA. The company specializes in a software-oriented approach to providing remote, automated laboratory services and software as a service (SaaS) products to biopharma companies and life science research facilities.

Products and Services[edit]

The core of Strateos’ products and services is the Strateos Software Platform, which drives the SmartLab Studios and the SmartLab Collaborate, Connect, and Control products.

History[edit]

Founding[edit]

In 2012 Max Hodak founded Transcriptic. Citing the need for more efficient and cost effective solutions for manual computations in the lab, the company was focused on developing software which could be coupled with automation for streamlined experimentation.[1]

In 2019 Transcriptic and 3Scan agreed to a merger which resulted in the creation of Strateos. At the time of the merger Mark Fischer-Colbrie was named president and CEO of Strateos. Fischer-Colbrie continues in this role presently.[2]

Business Development[edit]

Since its inception in 2019 Strateos has grown steadily. Based originally in Menlo Park, CA the company has expanded to include two additional locations in San Francisco and San Diego, CA. Strateos stated that their mission is to “create new knowledge driven by data, computation, automation and high-throughput robotics with the goal of fundamentally advancing the life sciences.” The company has stated that its goal is to modernize out-dated laboratory methods to improve the reliability of scientific findings and foster greater collaboration among the scientific community.

Their Menlo Park lab is situated in approximately 4,000 sq ft. . The San Diego location contains a further 11,500 sq. ft. Both labs combined are equipped with >200 instruments and 25 automation modules customized to the application of small molecule and biologics drug discovery, synthetic biology, and cell and gene therapy.[3]

Partnerships[edit]

In 2017 Ginkgo Bioworks announced a five-year collaboration with Transcriptic to incorporate the latter’s automation into Ginkgo’s foundry platform.[4]

In 2018 Transcriptic embarked on a multi-year partnership with pharmaceutical company Elli Lilly to head the San Diego Studio using Strateos proprietary software and automation. This collaboration continues presently with Strateos.[5]

Strateos ventured a successful partnership with fellow biotechnology company Amgen to demonstrate the ability of programmatic cloud labs to support a multi-site drug discovery campaign.[6]
