The Strathaven Hot Air Balloon Festival is an annual festival of hot air ballooning in Strathaven, Scotland. Teams from around Europe and is classed as one of the top 3 hot air balloon festivals in the UK by balloon pilots.
The festival is a three day held from Friday and Sunday with events happening throughout the weekend[1]
The festival attracts crowds of up to 40,000[2] the event is held in Strathaven park which hosts the festival every year, with balloon launches starting at 6am on the Saturday and Sunday, when wether permits
History
The Strathaven Balloon Festival began in 1999 when the locals from Strathaven wanted to generate public excitement and help the local economy. During the planning stages a hot air balloon festival was suggested as one of the members knew the owner of Cameron Balloons which was the largest manufacturer of hot air balloons. Who helped get the idea off the ground.[3]
The festival is ran by the Strathaven Balloon Festival Committee which is a non-profit voluntary organisation that raises money through the year to be able to host the event
The Balloon Festival is often cancelled due to high wind speeds or rain. the festival was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Attractions
One of the most popular attractions is the night glow, when balloons are inflated and glow to music after dark. These are held on the Sunday night at approximately 9pm. Many visitors consider this as the highlight of the festival.
The festival also hosts the The Sky Masters, From Skydive Strathallan. Who preform skydive displays on the Saturday and the Sunday around 4pm.
Throughout the Saturday and the Sunday there is an assortment of entertainment in the park some of these include: Live Music, fun fair, stalls, classic vehicles and tethered hot air balloons[4]
