Strathmore Secondary College is a state secondary school for students in Years 7 to 12, located in the Melbourne suburb of Strathmore. It is also close to the suburbs of Pascoe Vale and Essendon, being very near to Cross Keys Reserve.

History[edit]

The site that is now Strathmore Secondary College was once the Napier Park Greyhound Racing Track. In 1955, the Broadmeadows Council (which then included Strathmore) acquired this site, and the Victorian Department of Education attempted to purchase the site for a co-educational college. Though the council initially refused, the Department managed to acquire the site after a meeting of representatives of state school committees from Oak Park, Pascoe Vale South and Coburg West. The school was opened in 1957, though due to rapid student growth, it was not until 1960 that there were enough buildings to hold all students.

The school faced several challenges over the next few years. In 1961, the building of an overhead railway affected the southern boundary of the school. Between 1967 and 1970, the building of the Tullamarine Freeway realigned the Moonee Ponds Creek that ran through the school and also encroached on the schools boundaries. In 1969, Pascoe Vale Road was widened affecting the school's western boundary.

In this period, the school also gained a heated swimming pool in 1964 (which has since been demolished), funding from the Commonwealth Government for a science block in 1965, and an assembly hall in 1971. 1971 was also the tenth year in succession the school had over 1000 students enrolled.[2] During this period of time, Comedian Glenn Robbins also attended the school.

In 2006, the Victorian Space Science Education Centre (VSSEC) was built on the school grounds.[3] It is run by members of the school's science department.

On January 29th, 2014, the first day of school for the year, a bomb threat was called into the school causing the evacuation of the students.[4]

In 2018, the school introduced a new 'student team' - Napier.

Houses[edit]

Students at the schools are divided into one of six houses. Students remain in each house throughout the entirety of their enrolment. This student team structure is down to better manage and know the students. The houses are; Argyll, represented by the colour red and named after the Scottish shire of Argyll, Chisholm, represented by the colour gold and named after Caroline Chisholm, Dunlop, represented by the colour blue and named after Weary Dunlop, Stirling, represented by the colour green and named after the Scottish shire of Stirling, Burnet, represented by the colour purple and named after Frank Macfarlane Burnet, and Napier, represented by the colour pink and named after Thomas Napier.[5]
