Gameplay[edit]
Main Concept[edit]
Streets of Rogue is a top-down shooter, inspired by other similar games of the genre like Nuclear Throne.[1] The game uses roguelike mechanics, such as randomly generated levels and permadeath.
Progression[edit]
In each floor, the player is tasked with 3 or more missions each floor before taking an elevator to the next, with the option of completing side-quests, and character-exclusive "Big Quests". Every three floors a "disaster" occurs where the players face unique challenges, such as avoiding a killer robot, defusing bombs, etc.
Each zone is three floors long. As of the game's alpha stages, there are five different ones, getting harder as the player progresses and each having their own set of obstacles.
Goal[edit]
The main goal is to overthrow the corrupt mayor, ending the game.
As of the game's alpha stage, the game's ending is not complete (hence there is no mayor.) The developer promises to add more floors[2] (right now there are fifteen) and in the mean time there is a placeholder ending that cuts the game off towards the end of the fifteenth level.
Traits and Mutators[edit]
Each character class has a unique set of weaknesses and strengths, called "traits", and most characters have a unique ability. Temporary traits can also be earned at the end of a level every time the player levels up, and they are removed at the end of the game.
There are also mutators, which affect the game for all players and are set in the main hub before starting the game, allowing the players to mix up the experience for extra challenge or to use handicaps, such as having more than one life or increasing/decreasing the amount of health NPCs have.
After completing certain quests the players may earn potatoes as a currency, which can be spent on item unlocks and traits at the hub. The item unlocks can be enabled or disabled from the hub at any time before a game, so the player can influence what random-chance rewards are received when completing missions.
NPCs and Classes[edit]
In Streets of Rogue, players choose a class, or character, with different traits suited for different play styles. Each character class has different features, and so some characters are better at stealth while others may be better at combat and crowd control.
NPCs (non-player characters) can interact with the player and have unique behaviors, and the game allows the player multiple choices of how a mission can be completed. Some missions may require an item to be retrieved from an NPC, for example, and the player has the option to either knock out the target or pay for the item. Each choice has a slightly different outcome and players can choose their own play style. NPCs can also sell items and request favors, or side quests, from the player.
Different randomly generated rooms, missions, and events have an effect on how different NPCs behave. Property owners, and whoever is working for them, will become hostile if you attack them, steal from them, or break their property. Certain rooms have red doors, indicating that only the owners can enter, and if the player is caught in those rooms he/she is attacked unless they gain the trust of the owner, or bribe them.
Development[edit]
The game was released as an early access title on March 10th, 2017 and is actively receiving updates on Steam every so often. Streets of Rogue's early access release has allowed the community to push the game's development by sending in bug reports, and voting on suggestions to be included in the game.
Reputation[edit]
Streets of Rogue has received mostly good feedback so far. Critics are impressed with the freedom of choice and variety the game has to offer.[3]
