Sts. Peter and Paul Serbian Orthodox Parish is a church-parish the under the omofor of Bishop Mitrofan (Kodić) of the Serbian Orthodox Eparchy of Canada [1] located at 1039 Dundas Street West in Oakville, Ontario.[2][3]

History[edit]

The idea of a Mississauga-Oakville parish existed from 1970 during the time of Bishop Sava (Vuković), however, it took another decade for its realization.[4]

In the early 1980s a handful of Serbian families living in Oakville and Mississauga held intermittent church services in Oakville at the St. Cuthbert’s Anglican church. Most times it was once a month. Two priests held these services: Fr. Stevo Stojsavljević was the first; and Fr. Bogdan Zjalić was the second. The Provisional Board began investigating sites to build a premise to conduct services. A number of sites were looked at in Oakville but none proved to be suitable. Finally, the Church Board with Rev. Bogdan purchased a 10-acre of land. The recently-enthroned Bishop Georgije Djokić blessed the land on 17 November 1984. In March 1986, the mortgage on the land was fully paid. With the arrival of Rev. Miloš Milovanović in 1987, the church life improved. He began publishing a bulletin "Seme Vaskresnja" (Seeds of Resurrection) with religious and educational articles in order to teach his parishioners the basic principles of the Orthodox Faith.[5]

On 8 February 1990, Bishop Georgije established the Church-School Congregation of Saints Peter and Paul in Oakville. The Circle of Serbian Sisters is named after Carica Jelena. In 1993 the Sts. Peter and Paul Church was built almost ten years after the grounds were blessed because the Building Committee encountered mltiple objections in obtaining a permit from the civic authorities. [6]All that time the parish functioned in spite of such administrative difficulties.

When Rev. Milovanović was transferred to Niagara Falls the following clergy -- V. Rev. Protosyngelos Milutin Knežević of the Monastery of Kaona in Serbia, Hieromonk Neofit Avramović, V. Rev. Stevo Stojsavljević, and Bishop Georgije himself -- served the Oakville Serbian community before the arrival of the current priest.
