StuDocu

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

StuDocu, also known as StudeerSnel,[1] is an EdTech startup based in Amsterdam, Netherlands,[2] that is a peer-to-peer resource-exchange platform for students to share study aids, class notes, and test prep.[2][3] The company was founded in 2013 by Marnix Broer, Jacques Huppes, Sander Kuijk, and Lucas van den Houten while they were students at Delft University of Technology.[2][4][5] Broer is CEO.[2][4] The company has primary markets in 60 countries across Australia, Europe, UK, US, Canada, and Germany.[1][6][7]

In May 2021, StuDocu reported a Series B funding round of $50 million.[8] The round was led by the venture capital firm Partech located in Paris, France.[8] Prior to the Partech investment, StuDocu had raised nearly $10 million according to Broer.[8] Resource-exchange platforms had been questioned for their ability to prevent copyrighted material from being shared between users.[9][10] StuDocu accomplishes this through a tool on its platform that automatically checks uploaded content and removes the content in the event of a violation.[11] Users who suspect that documents might be copyrighted can submit take-down requests which StuDocu has stated that they will honor.[11]

StuDocu operates on a freemium model that makes 80% of the uploaded content available for free to all users while 20% of content remains behind a paywall.[12] Users have the option to pay for the restricted content or to upload their individual class notes, summaries, and other non-copyrighted materials, which can unlock the hidden 20% of content for a limited time.[12][13] As of 2021, Broer estimates that 15% of users pay for premium content, 15% access premium materials by uploading their own documents, and 70% use the free content and do not contribute to the community uploads.[8]
