Stuart Awbrey
Stuart Awbrey (1938-2004) was an American newspaper publisher and editor known for his contributions to community journalism.[1]
During the 1980s, Awbrey played a pivotal role in revitalizing The Cranford Chronicle (founded in 1893)[2] in New Jersey, earning him widespread recognition[3]. He and his wife had purchased the 85-year-old newspaper in 1978. The paper won the New Jersey Press Association's Enterprise Award in 1980 for a series on a tenure scandal and the superintendent's use of private investigators to spy on faculty members in the Cranford school system.
The Cranford Chronicle was a newspaper published in Cranford, Union County, New Jersey from 1893 to 2005.[4] It changed its name several times over the years, but was always known for its local news coverage and community involvement. The paper merged with The Star-Ledger in 2005, ceasing to exist after operating independently for 112 years.
In honor of his and his wife Beverley's achievements, the New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists established the Awbrey Award,[5] which acknowledges excellence in community journalism.
Awbrey is the author of "Chronicles of a Community Journalist" published in 1997.[6]
He died on January 11, 2004.[7]
As a VP and account executive at Carl Byoir & Associates, Awbrey was involved in the Children's Television Workshop, Sesame Street and the Electric Company, in New York City.
He edited the Peace Corps Volunteer Magazine and served as a spokesman for the agency during the Johnson Administration[8][9]. Awbrey was also a special assistant to U.S. Rep. Sidney Yates of Illinois and a senior public affairs representative of IBM Corp. He received over 90 awards during his 11 years at The Chronicle and remained active in Union County journalism after selling the Chronicle.
He died after battling Alzheimer's disease. In 1999, he provided testimony before the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging[10] stating "I can't allow myself to be preoccupied with the losses of the future — my longing to grow old along with my wife, sharing precious moments with my daughters and grandchildren. Instead, I focus on the present, living each day to its fullest. I want to urge this committee to do what you can, now, to fight this deadly disease," he said to the senators.[11]
