From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Stuart Palley (b. August 8th, 1988 in Newport Beach, CA) is an American documentary photographer, writer and speaker known primarily for his documentary work on wildfires, water use, night skies, and climate change. His first photography book, Terra Flamma: Wildfires at Night was published in September 2018 by Schiffer Publishing.[1] The work features a style of long exposure photography, taking images of wildfires on a tripod and leaving the shutter open for a long period of time. Previously he self-published Thou Shalt Offer Salt: Dispatches from the Salton Sea, a limited run monograph that looked at water issues at the Salton Sea in Riverside and Imperial Counties in Southern California.[2]

Palley guest lectured at his alma maters, Southern Methodist University and the University of Missouri, in addition to a 2016 TEDx talk titled Chasing Wildfires and Working Differently, where he discussed technological and economic trends that allow creatives to specialize in a certain field.

In addition to documentary work, Palley also works for various commercial and corporate clients to fund his ongoing projects.

Biography:

Stuart Palley studied finance, history, and human rights during undergraduate studies at Southern Methodist University before switching from a business career to photography and studying photojournalism at the University of Missouri’s School of Journalism as a graduate student. Upon his completion of graduate classes he returned to California to finish his master’s thesis and project on the Salton Sea in Imperial County, CA and related water and climate issues in 2013. That same year he began photographing wildfires and received his MA in photojournalism later that year.

Palley also worked at the Orange County Register as a photography apprentice during the summer and fall of 2013 while finishing his masters project on Thou Shalt Offer Salt: Dispatches from the Salton Sea. Between 2013 and 2017 Palley documented nearly 100 wildfires in California using a long exposure photography technique to take pictures of wildfires at night. The project was called Terra Flamma: Wildfires at Night and was published a hardcover photography book in September 2018 by Schiffer Publishing. The project was initially funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014 that was featured on the website’s homepage.[3] Terra Flamma went viral in 2014 and was featured in dozens of media publications across the globe.

In 2016 Palley presented at TEDx Sage Hill, giving a talk on the Chasing Wildfires and Working Differently[4] discussing how technology and new media have enabled creatives to find narrow niches and be successful in their careers. He also has spoken at his undergraduate and graduate alma maters, Southern Methodist University, and the University of Missouri. He also speaks to students at career days and research libraries.

His wildfire work has been recognized multiple times by Pictures of the Year International[5][6][7] and has been published in National Geographic Magazine[8], TIME[9], and many other publications in the US.

Currently based in Southern California Palley continues his work on Terra Flamma while exploring new personal projects relating to climate. Additionally he takes on various commercial assignments during the wildfire offseason.

Exhibitions:

In 2018 Palley held his first solo exhibition of fine-art photographs from the Terra Flamma: Wildfires at Night project at the Santora Space in Santa Ana, CA. Images from the exhibit will also be displayed at the California Museum of Photography in January 2019[10] as part of a group exhibit on the Inland Empire in Southern California. [11] [12]

Work with the US Forest Service:

Stuart Palley received a contract from the US Forest Service in June 2018 to be an official contract photographer of wildfire incidents for the United States Forest Service. One of a handful across the country, the photographers are assigned to incidents for a specified period of days, taking pictures for the incident command, and US Forest Service training and archival use. In 2017 Palley was deployed to the Thomas Fire, which became the largest wildfire in modern California history until the Ranch Fire surpassed it in 2018. In 2018 Palley was sent to the Ferguson Fire in Yosemite National Park and provided photo coverage for the US Forest Service and within Yosemite National Park.
