Studo, operating as Studo GmbH, is an educational technology company founded in Graz, Austria. Since 2016[1], it provides the Studo App, an university student app for organizing studies, for iOS and Android in several European countries.[2] Besides the Studo App, Studo works closely together with universities and students to develop digital solutions for university processes.[3]

Studo received the European Seal of Excellence by the European Commission in 2019.[4] In 2020, Studo was awarded as “best student app of the year” in the DACH-region by the "Apps" magazine.[5]

History[edit]

As the forerunner of the Studo App, the "UniOnline" apps were first released in the Google Play store in 2014 as a product of Valentin Slawicek, inventor of the later Studo App. Due to the rapid spread of the app in the Austrian student cities Graz, Vienna and Salzburg, the apps were then also programmed for iOS[6]. On April 16, 2016, the "UniOnline'' apps were replaced by version 1.0.0 of the Studo App, a product by Moshbit GmbH.[7]

As a start-up company[8][9], the team behind the Studo App participated in the Academic Startup Accelerator Program “Gründungsgarage”[10] of Technical University of Graz and University of Graz. In addition to numerous users of the app[11], Studo also partners with universities[12]. In February 2021, Studo reports 250,000 active users of the app.[2]

In 2020, Studo expanded to Germany and opened a second location in Düsseldorf in addition to its headquarters in Graz, Austria. As of February 2021, Studo employs 23 people.[13]

Applications[edit]

The Studo App is a mobile browser app specialized in university services[14]. The organization platform for students is available as a freemium product for iOS and Android. It is available in three languages (English, German, Slovenian) and can be used at more than 400 universities in Europe. With the Studo App, users have a central access point to all important university services (student information system, learning management system e.g. Moodle, emails)[15], which are displayed in the app through the MOCS-technology[16]. Calendar, course overview, mail client, news feed and chat are examples of features of the Studo App.[15]

Working closely together with students and universities, Studo started developing digital solutions to help universities push ahead with digitization. These additional modules have an inclusive and holistic approach and can also additionally be implemented into the Studo App.[17]

The collaborative development activities of Studo and European universities started in 2017 with a joint project with the department for quality and knowledge management of the Medical University of Graz[18]. To get insights into the equivalence of ECTS-points (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) and to develop the curricula further, the Medical University of Graz wished for a feedback tool that was easily accessible via the Studo App. As a result, the Workload Assessment was developed - with the goal to increase studyability.[19]

To support students’ mental health, Studo paired with Instahelp, a platform for psychological counseling online based in Graz. The joint project “Student Helpchat''[20] is an initiative to mentally support students in their everyday life as students[21][22]. Via the platform, students can be advised by certified online psychologists via phone call, video call or chat.

Another project of Studo is an open source contact tracing tool for university campuses. With “Campus QR”[23], students and employees of a university can easily check into a lecture hall by scanning a qr code. By doing so, contact chains can be traced back when a COVID-19 case is reported.

Studo supports universities’ IT-security with the blacklist service “Safe Campus Browsing”. Phishing, malware and fraud attacks against students can be fought by reporting dangerous websites to Studo.[24]
