Studydrive is an online study platform for higher education students based In Berlin, Germany. It was founded in 2013 and became part of Stepstone GmbH in 2019[1]. The platform is designed for students to exchange self-created university notes and revision material and offers those students forum-based networking possibilities. By its own account, the company has 2M users as of 2021, with the majority of students based in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and the UK.[2][3]
History[edit]
In 2012, Sven Gasper and Philipp Mackeprang had the idea of creating a space in which students could exchange study material. A year later, they founded Studydrive.[4][5] In January 2014, Gasper and Mackeprang received a European Social Fund stipend and in May 2015 and December 2016, Studydrive received its first and second funding rounds. Notable investors include Carsten Maschmeyer and DvH Ventures.[1][3][6] In March 2018, the company acquired the study app Veed and subsequently launched its own app.[4] In January 2019, Studydrive was acquired by Stepstone and entered the UK market.[1][5] By its own account, the platform hit one million users in the fall of 2019.[7] In March 2021, Gasper and Mackeprang stepped down as CEOs. The position is currently held by Karl Lauk and Hannes Kassens.[1][3]
Operations and Business Model[edit]
University students can use Studydrive to share self-created study notes like lecture notes and exam solutions.[8][9] They can also use it for discussion purposes about university-related topics.[8][10][11] A reward system serves as incentive to upload those notes.[4] Studydrive is free of charge for students, with the company’s revenue stemming from the selling of career products for recruiting and employer branding purposes to other companies.[4][11] Notable business partners include KPMG, Henkel, BCG and Deutsche Bank.[12]
