From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Su Shian-fa (1948 – present) is a Taiwanese oil and watercolor painter working in art education in Taiwan.[1] He has served as the head of the Department of Fine Arts and director of the Graduate Institute of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University[2], as well as a lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at Chang Jung Christian University[3]. He has also been the chairman of the Tainan Art Museum[4].

Biography

Su Shian-fa was born in a small fishing village in Budai Township, Chiayi County in 1948. In third grade, one of his still-life crayon drawings was featured on the cover of Elementary School Student Magazine. Due to his family’s financial situation, he chose to study in the art and crafts department of Chiayi Normal School. After graduating, he taught at Tucheng Elementary School in Tainan City for three years. After being admitted to the Department of Fine Arts at National Taiwan Normal University, he focused on Western painting and continued to create in oil and watercolor.[5] In 1973, he participated in the first National Youth Student Painting and Calligraphy Competition and won first place in the oil painting category for college art departments with his work “White Still Life.” This work is currently housed in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Taipei.[6] Since 1992, he has held solo exhibitions, such as “Pulse of Taiwan” in 2000, “Journey of Reflection” in 2001, “Visual Image and Mental Image” in 2003, “Su Shian-fa Solo Exhibition” in 2006, “Pure Land” in 2011, and a retrospective exhibition entitled “Seasons of Life” in 2016[7]. In 2018, he also held an oil painting solo exhibition entitled “Seasons of Life” at the Zhejiang Art Museum in Hangzhou, China[8]

Philosophy

During his travels and research in the West, particularly the United Kingdom, France, and the United States, Su Shian-fa sought inspiration for his creations through the exploration of foreign cultures, human landscapes, and art museums[9]. For example, in 2009 he was a visiting scholar at London Metropolitan University in the United Kingdom. During his stay in England, he created a series of works with the theme of “Autumn,” using autumn leaves and water reflections. In 2010 he held an exhibition in New York[10]. In 2013, he and his wife stayed in Marseille, France, for a week, where he created many works inspired by the landscapes of southern France[1]. In his own analysis, his artistic style is one of constant experimentation and innovation. During his university years, he tried different styles, including Cubism and Fauvism. After graduation, he shifted towards a realistic style and gradually developed it into a semi-realistic style. In recent years, he has incorporated memories of life and feelings about the changing seasons into his artistic creations. His works blend the poetic and expressive qualities of Eastern ink wash with the expression of oil painting, further evolving his style from semi-representational realism to abstract realism.[6]
