Sub-Zero Group, Inc. is the manufacturer of the kitchen appliance brands Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove and is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin. The Sub-Zero brand specializes in refrigeration and wine storage products, the Wolf division makes cooking equipment, and dishwashers are manufactured and branded under the Cove name. The company has production facilities in Fitchburg, Wisconsin and Goodyear, Arizona, and has more than 30 showrooms in the U.S. and more than 25 abroad. The Westye F. Bakke Center and the Harvest Haven garden that feeds guests of the training center are also located in Fitchburg. The company is family-owned.[1]

History[edit]

The roots of the company trace back to the 1930s when founder Westye Bakke, the son of a Norwegian immigrant who had previously worked as a Frigidaire salesman, began experimenting with refrigeration in part to find a better way to store insulin for his son Bud, who suffered from juvenile diabetes.[2] Bud later became the company’s second CEO.[3] During the Great Depression years of the 1930s, architect Frank Lloyd Wright hired Bakke as a consultant to create custom refrigeration for his projects, including the Johnson Wax Building and Wingspread.[4]

In 1945 Bakke founded the Sub-Zero company as a deep-freezer manufacturer with $2,000 of his own money.[5] The company introduced wine storage systems under the Sub-Zero brand in 1999[6] and entered the home cooking equipment market with the purchase of the residential side of the Wolf Range company in 2000.[7] The company expanded further in 2018, when it launched the Cove brand of luxury dishwashers.[8]

Design[edit]

Sub-Zero Group products are known for high-end technology and architectural design elements.[9] The company is also associated with luxury products that are sold at higher price points than other brands.[10]

The company supports advances in design by sponsoring the Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Cove Kitchen Design Contest, in which students and trade professionals, from kitchen, interior, and landscape designers, to builders, architects, and landscape architects compete for the year’s best kitchen projects in various categories. The contest has been held biennially since 1993.[11] [12]
