Subtopia (novel)
Subtopia is a 2005 Australian fiction novel by A. L. McCann. Set in Melbourne suburbia, the novel details the friendship between a straight-laced malcontent who meets a rebellious, destructive teen who exploits his environment for his own gratification and convinces him to travel to Berlin, Germany–where his sense of alienation only increases. The novel explores terrorism, the proliferation of mass-market pornography, sport, and the sexual liberation of 1970s urban Australia, while framing it in the context of a global culture in serious decline and degradation.[1]
Reception[edit]
The novel was well-received. In The Sydney Morning Herald, Sacha Molitorisz wrote: "The best novels speak the truth, literally or figuratively, and Subtopia resonates with the stuff. A bitter truth, sure, but one that needs airing. Subtopia is astutely observed and neatly delivered. Full of intelligence and sensitivity, this is the best Australian novel I've read in quite some time".[2]
