Sudhir Kumar Sen (22 February 1888[1] – 28 August 1959[2]) was one of the pioneers in the manufacture and development of bicycles in India. [3][4]

Early life and education

He was born on 22 February 1888 in Basanda, Barisal, present-day Bangladesh. He was the son of Chandi Charan Sen and the brother of Kamini Roy and Jamini Sen. He is the grand-uncle of Ipsita Roy Chakraverti. After graduating in English literature from the University of Calcutta, he entered business under the inspiration of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy . He established the Sen-Raley Bicycle Factory in Kanyakumari, Asansol , West Bengal in 1952. He also took over the management of the National Tannery in 1941 at the request of Dr. Nilratan Sarkar, his father-in-law,[5] and improved it. [6]

Career

He founded Sen & Pandit Co. in 1909 with the help of Ram Chandra Pandit and within a few days he became the owner of the company. Then in 1917 he published a monthly magazine called Indian Cycle and Motor Journal to promote the bicycle in India.[7] Then in 1912 he attended a trade conference organized by British bicycle industrialists in England. Since then he used to travel every year to various countries including England, Germany, America for sales and marketing.[8]

Death

He died on 28 August 1958 while traveling in Germany.[4]
