Suicide of Beranton Whisenant
Beranton Whisenant Jr. (c. 1979 – May 24, 2017) was an American federal prosecutor.
Early life and career
Whisenant worked for nine years at the law firm of Foley & Mansfield, becoming a partner in 2013. He became an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami in January 2017.[1]
Death
A passerby found Whisenant's corpse on Hollywood Beach, Florida on May 24, 2017.[2][3][4] He died aged 37 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.[4] He had worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office for only five months, since January 2017.[4] His memorial service was held on June 1, 2017 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Miami.[5] Whisenant left behind three children and his wife.[4] The U.S. attorney’s office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) determined that his death had no connection to his work as a prosecutor or his federal criminal cases. Hollywood Police Department detectives, as well as the Broward County medical examiner, determined that the death was a suicide.[6][7][8][4] Before the investigation has concluded; some websites had spread unfounded rumors about his death;[4] some far-right social media outlets falsely speculated that he was murdered.[9]
