Sujoy Roy is an Indian public health professional and researcher whose work has focused on maternal and child health, community participation and drowning prevention. He has worked with the Child in Need Institute (CINI) in Kolkata and has been involved in public-health advocacy and research in India.
Maternal health advocacy
Roy served as State Coordinator of the White Ribbon Alliance in West Bengal. He was involved in the development of the Indian campaign that preceded the global What Women Want initiative, which sought to document women's priorities for reproductive and maternal healthcare. [1] [2] Roy also wrote about the origins and development of the campaign in Ms. Magazine in 2018.[3]
Community advocacy
Roy worked with CINI in supporting Santana Murmu, a survivor of child marriage from West Bengal who later became an advocate against child marriage and was invited to speak at the United Nations in 2015. A Press Trust of India report identified Roy as one of the CINI professionals who supported Murmu's return to education and her advocacy work.[4]
Drowning prevention
Roy has been involved in research and community-based programmes addressing drowning prevention in India, particularly in West Bengal and the Sundarbans. His work has included research on drowning mortality, community-based interventions and environmental approaches to reducing drowning risk.
Research
Roy is a co-author of peer-reviewed studies on drowning epidemiology and prevention, including a statewide community-based survey of drowning deaths in West Bengal published in BMJ Global Health.[5]
Public health and institutional service
Roy has participated in research ethics and institutional service. He serves as a social scientist member of the OrciVita Independent Ethics Committee in Kolkata.[6]
Roy was also involved in maternal and child health accountability initiatives using digital tools. In 2016, Business Standard, in a report by the Press Trust of India, identified him as the State Coordinator of White Ribbon Alliance West Bengal while reporting on an initiative enabling legislators to track maternal and child health indicators.[7]
