Reception
Popularity
According to a writer at Automation, the anime's North American Twitter account confirmed that Suletta Mercury and Miorine Rembran married after the end of the anime, but Japanese sources did not do so. The fact that Japanese sources did not confirm whether Suletta and Miorine married displeased Japanese users.[3]
Critical response
James Whitbrook of Gizmodo called Suletta Mercury Gundam's "first-ever primary female protagonist".[4] He stated that her relationship with Miorine Rembran allowed Gundam fans to see what a queer relationship is like.[4] AnimeFeminist praised the usage of female characters in Gundam as main characters, claiming the franchise has a poor portrayal of them describes Suletta as "painfully anxious and an instant target for the cruelest students around her" and saw potential to the themes involving Suletta's and Miorine's origins.[5] Polygon compared her story to Revolutionary Girl Utena and praised her characterization for being different for previous pessismitc protagonists looking for validation but instead a child who wants to befriend others in a slice-of-life story.[6] ScreenRant noted that ever since the early episodes of the series, people started theorizing that Suletta is a clone of Prospera's real child who exists within Aerial. This is further supported by the commentary of how many years pass in between the prologue and the TV series with supporting character Elan Ceres also being revealed as a clone dealing with a unstable body with the original appearing in the same episodes. Meanwhile, Suletta's relationship with Prospera instead come across as unhealthy as the mother is actually manipulating the protagonist similar to one of the earliest antagonistic Gundam character Char Aznable whose iconic look is referenced by multiple Gundam antagonist including Prospera.[7]
The end of the first season of the Witch from Mercury featured Suletta piloting the Gundam Aerial to brutally kill a terrorist. Many viewers and commentators were caught off guard by the sudden act of violence, especially the imagery of Suletta's blood-stained hands and Miorine's horrified reaction.[8][9] The finale was compared Anime News Network to a major twist from Code Geass, another anime project worked by Ichirō Ōkouchi. Both the Witch from Mercury and Code Geass trended on social media as fans reacted to the gruesome scene in Gundam.[10] Japan's Broadcasting Ethics & Program Improvement Organization shared complaints from parents about the violent nature of the episode, with many finding it to be too graphic to show at the 5:00 PM timeslot when children are still up to watch it.[11]
Relationship with Miorine Rembram
On July 26, 2023, an interview with Witch from Mercury's voice cast in the September 2023 issue of Gundam Ace magazine included a quote from Kana Ichinose in which she referenced Suletta and Miorine's marriage. Miorine was also directly referenced as Suletta's wife by the official English-language Gundam Twitter account on the day of the finale.[12] Following the release of the magazine interview, the hashtag スレミオ結婚 (SuleMio Marriage) trended in Japan.[13] Days later, however, the digital version of the Gundam Ace interview was edited to remove the direct reference to marriage, causing an immediate backlash from Japanese and Western fans of the show, who claimed the characters' "undisputed" status as a married couple was being deliberately censored.[14]
On July 30, a statement was released by Kadokawa in which they claimed the discrepancy was a "proofreading mistake" and that the marriage reference was based on "editorial speculation".[15] An accompanying statement was released on the official Witch from Mercury website in which these claims were repeated, in addition to implying the events of the series are open to interpretation by viewers,[16] leading to angry or confused responses from fans and general viewers who pointed out Suletta and Miorine's marriage was objectively confirmed both in the anime's final scene and by the characters' voice actors in an audio commentary for the final episode or official final stream after that, and as such no room for "interpretation" exists.[17][14]
The wedding itself was not depicted on-screen, but the characters are shown wearing rings in the final scene of the series, and Suletta's sister Ericht refers to herself as Miorine's sister-in-law. The September 2023 issues of the Animage and Animedia magazines published on August 9 provided Mamiko Noto and Lynn's interpretations of the scene as Ericht behaving like an in-law.[18][19] The queer commentary led to mixed reactions to Polygon as he believed that while it is obvious the two are romanticall involved, it can be left to the viewer's interpretation.[20] Espinof noted the negative backlash to such censorship.[21]
ScreenRant noticed that the series received multiple criticism for being too political despite most Gundam installments providing such type of commentary. As a result, the writer claimed that the series stands out because it is the only anime to portray a LGBTQ+ relationship in a positive fashion in the form of Suletta and Miorine, contrast to negative takes in Gundam Build Divers and Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans.[22] Gizmodo writer James Whitbrok said that the two characters had a strong relationship regardless of the chaos the two are put into like Miroine is shocked by the violence in the first season's cliffhanger and noticed their split from the second season made viewers root for them to be together again. The writer praised the anime's staff for always providing strong scenes when Suletta and Miorine are interacting and how the story focuses on the children's trauma and wonder whether or not the finale will embrace the romance or end in tragedy based on the multiple previous Gundam series that also explored romance and tragic romance.[23]
