PT Selamat Sugeng Rahayu (doing business under the name Sumber Group) is an Indonesian bus company from East Java based in Krian, Sidoarjo, Sidoarjo Regency, East Java. Founded in 1981 under the name Sumber Kencono, the bus company was developed as Sumber Group using brands such as Sumber Selamat, Sugeng Rahayu, Golden Star, and SR Express. The first two operate as intercity buses, while Golden Star operates as a tourist bus and SR Express as a courier. The company's head office and main garage are located at Jalan Raya Surabaya–Ngawi km 25, Sidorejo, Krian, Sidoarjo.

History

Sumber Kencono

Sumber Kencono was founded in 1981 by the Setyaki Sasongko family. In the early days of its operations, this bus company only operated six buses serving its main route, SurabayaYogyakarta.[1] The initial service was in economy class, so it easily attracted passengers from various groups. At the same time, Sumber Kencono had to compete with other bus companies like Flores, which had larger fleets.[2]

Initially, Setyaki entrusted his buses to be operated by Kentjono, a bus company from Jember Regency. He then applied for a permit to operate public transportation on the route to the East Java Provincial Transportation Agency, where the agency and Setyaki agreed to use the name "Sumber Kencono." Sumber Kencono then acquired the bus fleet and routes owned by Maju Mapan, which was nearing collapse at the time. After that, Sumber Kencono also operated the SurabayaYogyakarta and Surabaya–Badegan routes, then added the Surabaya–Wonogiri and Surabaya–Semarang routes.[3]

Name "Sumber "Kencono," meaning "gold source," reflects Setyaki's hope to make his company a continuously profitable venture. With a rapidly growing market, he saw buses as a promising business in Java. The buses' characteristic high speeds made Sumber Kencono's name increasingly well-known. Gradually, its reputation as the "king of the road" became ingrained in the memories of land transportation users.

This competition changed drastically after an accident involving a Flores bus and a Solo high-speed train at Purwosari Station on May 7, 1981. The accident resulted in the Flores bus company being banned from operating intercity and regional services in the Surakarta area. This situation immediately opened up a significant opportunity for Sumber Kencono to acquire passengers previously served by its competitors. This momentum became the starting point for the rapid increase in company activities.[2]

Throughout the 1980s, Sumber Kencono gained increasing public interest. This was because the company was able to provide very frequent departure schedule, namely every 20 minutes. The availability of an adequate fleet made their service relatively smooth and rarely experienced delays. Public trust began to grow along with the consistency of the services offered by this bus company.[2] In its operations, Sumber Kencono provides two types of services, namely economy class non-AC and low-fare AC or "regular fare AC." This service became a popular choice on the main routes of Java because of its affordable fares. As of 2011, the company was recorded as having 255 fleet units consisting of 230 regular fleets and 22 reserve fleets. This number makes Sumber Kencono one of the largest bus companies in East Java. [4]

However, its popularity and large fleet are not matched by adequate driving discipline. Many bus drivers drive buses at speed limits or even recklessly on the road. As a result, accidents involving Sumber Kencono buses are quite common. It is not surprising that then there was a sarcasm from the public who distorted the name Sumber Kencono to become Sumber Bencono or "bus that takes lives."[5][6] The company's accident records from 2009 to 2011 show a worrying trend. In that period, there were 51 accidents with a total of 129 victims consisting of injured and deceased victims. A total of 36 people are known to have died, further tarnishing the company's safety reputation. The last accident before major changes occurred on September 12, 2011, and sparked a strong reaction from the local government.[7]

The Governor of East Java, Soekarwo, recommended the revocation of Sumber Kencono's route permit and company permit following the accident. He also requested that all SIM drivers be inspected to ensure eligibility and safety standards. The Ministry of Transportation then imposed administrative sanctions in the form of a 40% reduction in the fleet that was allowed to operate. In the face of this crisis, Setyaki acknowledged weaknesses in management, including in the arrangement of rest hours and driver training.[4][8]

Regeneration

As a reform effort, Setyaki completely overhauled the company's management and regenerated the organizational structure. On July 14, 2011, the 80 Sumber Kencono fleet was renamed Sumber Selamat as a symbol of a new commitment to safety. These buses are also equipped with a GPS connected to a speed monitoring system to monitor driver behavior in real time. Along with this change, the Directorate General of Land Transportation on February 9, 2012 decided that the Sumber Kencono route permit would not be revoked because the company was deemed to have been managed more professionally.[9][10][11]

After the regeneration, Setyaki began to be firm on safety issues and threatened to issue a third-degree written warning to every driver. which still operates recklessly. In 2013, as a companion to Sumber Selamat, the company launched a new brand called Sugeng Rahayu, meaning "prosperous" or "away from disaster." This brand was introduced and used starting in 2012 to replace the company's remaining operational fleet still using the Sumber Kencono brand. It featured a red and yellow color scheme that provided a distinct visual identity from its predecessor. The trademark was eventually held by a single company with the legal name PT Selamat Sugeng Rahayu.[11]

Early in its operations, Sugeng Rahayu was not immune to incidents. On December 27, 2013, a Sugeng Rahayu bus hit a motorcycle on Jalan Raya Perak, Jombang, resulting in the bus being set on fire. The Head of the East Java Transportation and LLAJ Agency's notes show that the bus was only traveling at a speed of 32 km/hour, so it was concluded that the driver was not overspeeding. In 2014, Sugeng Rahayu then expanded its services by launching the first patas class on the Surabaya–Yogyakarta and Surabaya–Semarang routes, as well as opening other long-distance routes such as SurabayaYogyakartaBandung, JemberMojosariPurworejoCilacap, SurabayaParakan-WonosoboPurbalingga, SurabayaPurworejo-Purwokerto, SurabayaPurworejoCilacap, SurabayaPurworejoPurwokertoBumiayu, SurabayaSoloSemarangKuningan, SurabayaSoloSemarangPekalonganIndramayu as well as the newest route in the patas class, namely SurabayaSoloSemarangCirebon which was launched on November 2, 2024 before finally being extended to Pamanukan starting February 2025.[12] Currently, the leadership of Sumber Group is continued by Setyaki's son, Hartono Sasongko.[13]

In 2011 data collection, Sumber Kencono was recorded as having 255 buses.[4] In the 1990s and 2000s, Sumber Kencono was known for using a front-engine chassis as its mainstay. The chassis is manufactured by the Chinese manufacturer, Dongfeng EQ6120KSD (front engine 12 m (39 ft)) which is known for its power and is a mainstay of "racing" buses, paired with various locally made bodies such as Laksana and others.[14]

After regeneration, Sumber Group has become a bus company that is not picky about chassis or bodywork. The regular fare AC buses owned by the Sumber Group are supported by a front engine chassis, such as the Hino AK8 A215[15] and Mercedes-Benz OF 1623.[16] Meanwhile in the premium class, Sumber Group operates rear-engine buses such as Hino (RK8 R260,[15] RN 285[17]), and Mercedes-Benz OH 1626 which has been equipped with air suspension.[18]

Regarding bus bodywork, the economy-class buses from Sumber Selamat and Sugeng Rahayu rely heavily on refurbished bodies, particularly from the Langgeng Jaya bodywork company. As a result, the "Jetbus3+" front engine was born, which uses a modified Laksana body.[19] However, since November 2025, Sugeng Rahayu's economy class buses have begun to rely on new buses made by Laksana (Discovery SR-3).[20] Meanwhile, its non-economy class buses use original Jetbus Adi Putro from various generations.[21]

Distinctive

The distinctive feature of Sumber Group is the use of mayang lights on the roof of its buses. [20] In addition, since the Sumber Kencono era, Sumber Group buses have had the iconic split windshield, which Sugeng Rahayu/Sumber Selamat still uses today (except for modern buses or non-economy/fast/patas classes). [22] For the body appearance, the bus ATB classy is easily recognized by its paint pattern: gray with red and dark blue stripes (for Sumber Selamat) and gray with a combination of blue and red with a dolphin image;[23] or gray combined with dark blue with a star pattern, with a more sporty style (for Sugeng Rahayu).[20] Meanwhile, the non-economy Sugeng Rahayu uses a distinctive red paint scheme with a yellow star pattern.[21]

Routes

Intercity Buses

PO Sumber Group operates Intercity Interprovincial Bus (AKAP) services that reach strategic areas in Java, including West Java[lower-alpha 1], Central Java, Special Region of Yogyakarta, and East Java, with Surabaya as the primary departure point. In its operations, Sumber Group competes in a duopoly market structure alongside Eka and Mira on these busy inter-regional corridors. The daily frequency of departures makes Sumber Group's services a primary choice for medium- and long-distance travel, whether for work, education, or family trips. Route consistency and relatively busy operating hours are the company's main strengths in maintaining its loyal passenger base.[24][12]

In terms of service class, Sumber Group divides its fleet into economy class and non-economy class segments. Economy class is known as AC Ordinary Fare (ATB), which despite being in the affordable fare segment, is still equipped with standard safety and comfort facilities such as air conditioning, television, 2–3 seat configuration, LED interior lighting, light fire extinguisher (APAR), and emergency glass breaking hammer. This ATB service is operated through the Sumber Selamat and Sugeng Rahayu units.[15] Meanwhile, for the non-economy or executive segment also known as Patas or Cepat, Sumber Group relies on the Sugeng Rahayu Cepat fleet. The Express Class offers more comprehensive amenities, including a 2-2 seating configuration, drinking water, an on-board restroom, and meal service, making it suitable for passengers who prioritize comfort and travel efficiency.[15]

Since February 4, 2023, the Sumber Group has operated an intercity bus route in AC Economy Class connecting Surabaya to Purwokerto, with several cities passing through, including Madiun, Maospati, Ngawi, Solo, Yogyakarta, and Purworejo. The service initially departed from Surabaya at 9 a.m. before increasing the number of departures, with some flights extending beyond Purwokerto to Bumiayu and Purbalingga City.[25]

Non-route business

In addition to the regular route business, Sumber Group also develops non-route businesses in the tourism bus sector through the Golden Star brand.[26] This tourism bus is used to serve tourism trips, group rentals, and special transportation needs such as corporate or institutional trips. In terms of appearance and specifications, the Golden Star fleet is nearly identical in shape and design to the Sugeng Rahayu Fast or non-economy class, emphasizing a modern and premium feel. The presence of this tourism line expands Sumber Group's business scope beyond regular passenger transportation and provides a significant source of additional revenue, particularly during the holiday season and periods of high demand.

Courier

In logistics, Sumber Group operates a courier service under the brand name SR Express. This service leverages the company's existing operational network and routes, enabling faster and more efficient intercity delivery of goods and documents. SR Express serves small to medium-scale package delivery needs, particularly in the Java corridor, which serves as Sumber Group's main operational base. Supported by a fleet of buses operating daily, this courier service is able to offer relatively short delivery times, while strengthening Sumber Group's position as a transportation company focused not only on passenger transportation but also on mobility and distribution support services.
