Sumoli is a social constructed auxiliary language. It is a pidgin of various Indian languages, naturally evolved through the Discord platform. The name 'Sumoli' comes from two words: 'Su' comes from the Sanskrit 'sukha' – easy/convenient, and 'Moli' comes from the Tamil 'mozhi/mozhli' – language. Sumoli was created with the purpose of forming a neutral Indian language, focusing on uniting the Indo-Aryan and Dravidian language families. It was first conceived by Ananthakrishna Kaithalayil as an experiment to see if people would develop a new communication system if they were mutually unintelligible[1]. This was tested through the Sumoli server where English is forbidden. Therefore, various speakers of Indian languages used a combination of emojis, GIFs, and pictures to associate meanings to words taken from their native languages. It was made a rule that there would be no official Sumoli dictionary except a bare-bones lexicon. Members were required to maintain personal notes on the language. Within a week, a primordial form of grammar evolved, and within two weeks, vocabulary kept by a few users exceeded 200. This led to comfortable communication between members. Sumoli is a work in progress; i.e., it will never be completed. It is constantly evolving, and as it evolves, the documentation is updated.

Syntax

The Sumoli language currently leans towards fusional in type, so one morpheme usually carries many grammatical features.

Sentences in Sumoli are rendered in the SOV word order (subject–object–verb). Example: Me Sumoli pes thu. (I speak Sumoli.)
