Sung Cho (Korean: 조성문; also known as Sungmoon Cho) is a South Korean entrepreneur who founded the music analytics company Chartmetric and serves as its chief executive officer.[1][2] He previously worked at the South Korean video game company Gamevil and at Oracle.[1]
Early life and education
Cho studied electrical engineering and computer science at Seoul National University. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.[1]
Career
While attending university, Cho joined Gamevil as the company's first engineer and spent approximately seven years developing mobile games.[2] He later worked as a principal product manager at Oracle.[1]
Cho founded Chartmetric in 2015 after becoming interested in the international growth of K-pop and the potential use of data in the music industry.[1] The company collects and organizes data from streaming services, social media platforms and other sources for record labels, artists, managers and other music-industry professionals.[1]
Chartmetric initially focused on artists, management companies and small and medium-sized independent record labels rather than major labels. Its use later expanded among employees of the major record companies.[2] By the end of 2021, the company had raised approximately $2 million in seed funding since its founding.[3]
In 2023, Cho was appointed an independent director of the South Korean entertainment company SM Entertainment.[4]
Writing
Cho is the author of the Korean-language book Spin It: Secrets of the People Who Make the World Move Faster (스핀 잇: 세상을 빠르게 돌리는 자들의 비밀), published by Altus in 2013.[5]
