Dr. Sunil Chandra Bose(1894-1953) M.B.B.S., D.T.M. , M.R.C.P. was India's first cardiologist and an emiment physician and founder of the Cardiological Society of Bengal.

Early Life and Education[edit]

He was the fifth son of Janakinath Bose and Prabhabati Devi and elder brother of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. He was born in Cuttack and studied at Ravenshaw Collegiate school where he passed his entrance examination in 1909 securing first rank from Orissa division. Thereafter he came to Calcutta and passed Intermediate Examination in Science in 1911 from Presidency College with a rank of 7 (Dr. SN Bose who was his contemporary secured 1st position). He went onto to study at the Calcutta Medical College and in 1914 obtained the Rakhal Das memorial award for 1st place with honours in Materia Medica and was awarded the Gold Medal in Pharmacology. He passed his final MBBS exam in 1918 and stood first in surgery. In 1920 he travelled to London for further studies and passed D.T.M (London) and MRCP (London) in 1921. Thereafter he worked as an assistant to the eminent cardiologist & King's physician Sir Thomas Lewis at the University College and Hospital. In 1922 he returned to Calcutta to work at the Medical College Hospital but subsequently returned to London to work with Sir Thomas Lewis again at Harley Street, London after being awarded the Rashbehari Ghosh travelling fellowship in 1925.

Career[edit]

In 1926 Dr. Bose returned from England with the first ECG machine to India. Dr. S.C. Bose had many eminent personalities as his patients primarily being his brother Subhas. He treated Netaji in Mandalay Jail in Burma in February 1926 when he was being suspected of suffering from TB. In 1927 he again treated him in Rangoon Central Jail and suggested recuperating in Europe. Subhas went to Dalhousie.In 1931 he attended Rabindranath Tagore in Calcutta and Swami Abhedananda in 1933. In 1937 on October 26th and 27th he attended Mahatma Gandhi who had suffered from a heart attack and took his ECG. On November 17th he accompanied Gandhi and his second brother Sarat Bose to Hijli jail. In 1938 he was part of made Chairman of the Selection committee to India's medical mission to China. He attended to his brother Subhas in the Haripura Congress and Tripuri Congress sessions in the years 1938 and 1939 and to Mahatma Gandhi in 1945 during his fast in Sodepur.In 1946 Dr. Bose founded the 'Cardiological Society of Bengal of which he was the 2nd President, the 1st President being Dr. B.C.Roy. In 1948 he became President, Cardiology division of Indian Medical Congress in Bombay. He also treated Nandalal Bose at his Short street home in Calcutta in 1948 and attended to Dr. M.N.Roy in Mussoorie in 1953.

Dr. S.C.Bose passed away on November 17,1953 in Calcutta.
