Sunnybrook Plaza

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Sunnybrook Plaza is a shopping centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada located on the Northeast corner of Eglinton Avenue and Bayview Avenue in the former city of East York.[1] The Sunnybrook Plaza is owned by RioCan and Vancouver-based company Concert Properties.[2] RioCan plans on redeveloping the Sunnybrook Plaza.[3] The plaza also has office spaces above certain stores.[4]

History[edit]

The Sunnybrook Plaza was opened after World War 2 in 1952 due to demand because of the post-war boom. It was Toronto's first suburban strip plaza.[5] Some of the plaza's first anchors were the Power Supermarket, Retiman's and The Canadian Bank of Commerce, all of which, have been replaced.[6][7]

In August, 2013, a car crashed into a Rexall Pharma Plus drug store in the Sunnybrook Plaza, damaging the front of the store and injuring a pedestrian in the process.[8][9]

In April, 2014, the Uptown Restaurant (formerly the SunnyBrook Restaurant and Tavern) was permanently closed and replaced by sushi restaurant, Rollian Sushi. The restaurant had a makeover on the Food Network in 2012.[10]

Metrolinx announced it would be opening a community office in the Sunnybrook Plaza in July, 2014 where customers could ask questions about the upcoming light rail transit line, the Eglinton Crosstown.[11]

Redevelopment Plans[edit]

In January, 2015, RioCan announced they were going to redevelop the Sunnybrook Plaza into two buildings. There would be around 426 dwelling units, 397 underground parking spots and 23 surface spots (420 in total).[12] The proposed buildings would be 13 and 19 storeys, but had to be cut back to 11 and 16 storeys due to height restrictions.[13] The same month, another car crashed into the Plaza. The store it crashed into was the York TAPS store.[14]

RioCan sold 50 percent ownership in the Sunnybrook Plaza to Concert Real Estate for $26.3 million in June, 2017.[15] In December, 2017, RioCan stated that the two proposed buildings would be rental apartments.[16]
