Sunshine Aquarium(Sunshine Aquarium, jaサンシャイン水族館) is an Public aquarium located at World Import Mart in Higashiikebukuro, Sunshine City, Toshima, Tokyo. Located on the roof of a building 40 m (130 ft) above the ground.[10] Opened in October 1978.[1][2][3] It was closed for one year from September 1, 2010, and the entire building was renewed and reopened on August 4, 2011.[1][2][3] The theme of the facility is "Oasis in the Sky".[11][3]
Overview
Japan's first rooftop Public aquarium. Due to the rooftop of the building, there was a weight limit, so the aquarium couldn't use a lot of water,[12] but since the entire building was renewed, the aquarium has been breeding large creatures such as Ocean sunfish and bowmouth guitarfish, "Dance with zebra sharks" and "flying penguins"[13] and "jellyfish sky feeling" There are also events such as, and attracts more than 1.5 million visitors annually.[6][7][1][2]
The aquarium had been breeding sea otters until 2016, but because the female "Mir" died of lymphoma, the aquarium decided to stop breeding sea otters that it had been breeding for 30 years.[14][15]
