Superbalist.com is a South African online fast fashion retailer. The company was founded in 2010 and sells clothes, shoes and beauty products to women, men and children. It also offers homeware.

Superbalist recently merged with Spree – a competitor business – to create the biggest online fashion platform in South Africa. It is part of South Africa’s leading online retail group, Takealot, which is owned by Naspers. The Takealot group owns 49% of Superbalist and has management control; Media24, a subsidiary of Naspers, owns 51%.

Superbalist is headquartered in Cape Town and employees 240 people.

History

2011: The company was founded by Luke Jedeikin, Claude Hanan and Daniel Solomon in 2010 as Citymob, a group-buying company focused on high quality deals

2013: The site re-launched as Superbalist.com in 2013. Wantitall — one of the bigger players in the South African ecommerce space — invested in Superbalist as an equity partner, allowing logistical capabilities, website, user experience and products to be improved

2014: Superbalist was acquired by Takealot.com (backed by hedge fund company Tiger Global Management)

2015: Superbalist moved 100% into fashion in 2015, with an offering comprising 60% brands and 40% private label

2018: Superbalist merged with Spree to become the biggest online fashion platform in South Africa

Online retail environment

South Africa’s online retail industry is growing rapidly as barriers – such as lack of trust or access to high speed internet – are rapidly being broken down. World Wide Worx research showed e-commerce in South Africa passed the 1% share of market mark in 2016. Superbalist has grown by double digits year-on-year since it was started.
