Support club

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Larger outlaw motorcycle clubs will often establish localized smaller clubs that are subservient to the gang. These clubs are referred to as support clubs, satellite clubs or puppet clubs. They act as auxiliary groups, providing support to the larger club by propelling their influence further, acting as sources of recruitment and various other ways in return for protection and to bolster their reputations.[1] Support clubs can also be used to help the principle club facilitate criminal activities.[2]

Background on outlaw motorcycle clubs[edit]

The term "outlaw motorcycle club" was initially used to refer to clubs that were unrecognized by the American Motorcyclist Association, but has since been used as a label to distinguish motorcycle groups that are known to rebel against society's norms and laws from the social motorcycling clubs that follow them.[3][4] The existence of outlaw motorcycle clubs can be traced back to as early as the late 1930s in Michigan, Southern California, and along the East Coast of the United States.[5]

The title, synonymous with "biker gang", is frequently utilized by law enforcement to describe motorcycle clubs that are criminal organizations. It has its own subculture, consisting of members which typically ride cruiser motorcycles and wear kuttes. Many outlaw motorcycle groups participate in crimes ranging from drug trafficking to murder and are heavily involved in organized crime.[6][7]

Outlaw motorcycle clubs are comprised of localized groups known as chapters. In contrast, biker gangs also have what is known as a "mother chapter", the very first chapter established for that particular motorcycle club which acts as a "home base" of operations.

Overview[edit]

Support clubs commit to supporting the needs of their dominant outlaw motorcycle club. They operate by themselves but have members of their mother club which serve as advisors.

Support clubs can, and are often, used as a recruitment pool as many support club members end up "graduating" to their dominant club as full-patched members.[8] Support clubs often prove their suitability for membership by doing the criminal bidding of the larger outlaw motorcycle club.[9]

Support clubs are typically regional, based in a single location rather than having nationwide or global chapters. However, there are some exceptions to this like the Chicanos Motorcycle Club, a Bandidos support club which has chapters in at least 8 countries.

Insignia and patches of support clubs often bear a resemblance to the logo and colors of their senior outlaw motorcycle clubs as a way of signifying their allegiance. For example, several Bandidos support clubs have logos which consist of the traditional red and gold colors worn by members of the Bandidos. The support clubs may also have names which are related to the name of principle group. For instance, the Hells Angels have a number of puppet clubs with names that involve iconography related to "hell" including the Red Devils MC, Demon Knights MC, Devils Choice MC, and Satan's Soldiers MC.

Many law enforcement agencies regard support clubs to be facilitators of criminal activity at the discretion of the mother club as they are often used to service the illicit needs of the larger outlaw motorcycle club in an attempt to separate the larger gang from actual street-level crimes.[10][8] In most cases, these crimes are directed and supervised by a member of the larger outlaw motorcycle club or the larger outlaw motorcycle club itself - forbidding the support club to engage in criminal activities at its own discretion.[11]
