Survivalist: Invisible Strain is a 2025 construction and management simulation and action-adventure survival video game for Microsoft Windows and Xbox. It was developed by a single independent developer Bob the Game Development Bot. The player controls a customized character to survive by exploring, scavenging, and fighting the undead in a zombie apocalypse, eventually building a stable settlement and manage group trust and diminishing resources.
The game was launched as an early access on April 6, 2019, and fully released on April 25, 2025.[2] Survivalist: Invisible Strain has been described as taking insipiration from State of Decay, pairing "a comic-book visual style with an open-ended world."[3]
Gameplay
Survivalist: Invisible Strain blends third-person action with real-time tactics elements.[3] Players can switch between directly controlling a character and issuing commands from an overhead perspective, allowing for both moment-to-moment combat and broader settlement management.
The game is playable in both a campaign mode, which introduces core systems, and a sandbox mode that emphasizes emergent gameplay and player-driven objectives.[4] In sandbox, players begin with minimal resources and are free to scavenge, build shelters, recruit survivors, and expand a settlement.
Gameplay revolves around managing a community in a hostile, zombie-infested world. Players must secure food, water, and shelter while defending against zombies and hostile groups, balancing individual survival with group dynamics. Non-player characters possess distinct personalities and memories, reacting to the player's actions. This influences recruitment, cooperation, or conflict with said character.
Building and colony management in Survivalist: Invisible Strain revolves around block-by-block building piece construction of settlements.[3] Players can arrange furnishings to meet the needs of survivors and establish defenses against zombie attacks. Players must manage interpersonal relationships among survivors and maintain their overall well-being. Sandbox mode also enables player to focus on "city-building and the more social aspects."[4]
Combat allows multiple approaches which include stealth, negotiation, or direct violence. In combat, player may enact targeted attacks on enemy's specific body parts.
The titular "Invisible Strain" is a mechanics that does not immediately transform individuals into zombies.[1] Instead, infected characters initially appear indistinguishable from healthy survivors and unknowingly spread the infection. Over time, these individuals may abruptly turn. Player must monitor and manage potential infections among their group.
