Survive the Nights is a multiplayer, open world, survival horror video game currently being developed for Microsoft Windows and macOS. This is the first game to be released by independent game developer a2z(Interactive); Ltd through a successful KickStarter campaign.[1]

The game takes place on Black Island, a 64km² fictional island. The main objective is to survive against zombies and other potential online players while having to scavenge for food, water, medical supplies, and various other items.[2][3][4]

Gameplay[edit]

The goal of Survive the Nights is to survive against zombies and other players for as long as possible. The player must maintain proper calorie and water intake to maintain overall health; without this the player gradually become weak and starve.[5][6] The zombies are less aggressive during the day and more aggressive in darkness. During the day, players are able to scavenge, hunt and loot for food, water, and a variety of useful items in addition to securing a place to spend the nights.[7][8][9] The game utilizes day and night cycles, along with season and dynamic weather systems, which are meant to encourage players to stockpile resources for winter.[5][10][11][12] Body temperature must also be maintained.[11][13]

Half of the 100,000 objects in game are interactable, with 24,154 fellable trees, 15,858 fixed objects, and over 400 structures.[14] Rather than building structures, players must find and use proper tools for a variety of repairs and fortification to existing structures or camp in rural locations.[7][15] All structures are enterable and can be fortified with planks, locks, and various crafted traps.[6][8][11][13] Vehicles can be repaired and used for transportation or as a mobile shelter.[6][11][13][15] Generators are used to deliver electricity to power structures and combining components together to craft items, such as traps, which are useful to further a player's survival.[5][7][11][13][15]

The game will incorporate an RPG style leveling system; as a player does a specific task, they get more efficient at it.[5][7][11][13] A mental health system is used to deal with excessive PvP gameplay, creating gradually worse consequences for killing other players until eventual suicide.[5][6][9][11][13]

Development[edit]

The original idea for Survive the Nights was conceived by a2z(Interactive); Ltd founders Joseph Ciappa (Brooklyn, NY) and James Wright (Hull, UK) who had became friends playing online games and hosting a Minecraft server together.[16]

In early 2014, a2z(Interactive); Ltd had expanded to 5 members and began designing the original concept video for the game which were released onto a Steam concept page.[16] Three months later, the game went into Steam Greenlight, hitting the top 100 list within 24 hours, and the #1 position within 5 days, being greenlit within 12 days.[16][17] Shortly after entering Steam Greenlight, a Kickstarter page was made with an original goal of £12,000, exceeding that goal and finally reaching a total of £108,398 in support from 6,262 backers.[5][14][16]

The game had originally been planned for a February 2015 alpha release, beta release in April 2015, and a August 2015 full release.[6][13] The release date was later pushed back until December 2016, and then rescheduled again for 2017.[5][18] The team being inexperienced caused several wrong time-frame assessments and unforseen technical problems.[15]

Reception[edit]

Stiil in its early access, it has earned a gamerscore of 5.66 on whatoplay based on 670 user reviews.[19]
