Susan (Basso) McCauley is a screenwriter, playwright, short story writer, novelist, independent film producer, and actress.

Early Life[edit]

Susan McCauley grew up in Nassau Bay, Texas, near NASA’s Johnson Space Center. Her father, Victor J. Basso, M.D., was a respected ophthalmologist in the area, and her mother, Sandy Basso, managed his medical practice. McCauley attended Clear Creek High School. After finishing high school, she began her studies at the University of Houston, where she received a BA in Radio-TV with a minor in Theater. Upon graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, California, where she studied acting (the Meisner technique) with Jeff Goldblum and Robert Carnegie at Playhouse West (i). She went on to receive an MFA in writing from the University of Southern California where she studied with notable writers including Hubert Selby, Jr. and Donald Freed. She later received a MA in Text & Performance from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and King’s College in London where she was mentored by director Robin Midgely.

Career[edit]

McCauley has written plays, screenplays, short stories, novellas, and novels, and has also worked as an indie film producer and actress. Her short story, “The Cask,” was published in the multi-award winning anthology, Quoth the Raven, published by Camden Park Press (ii). Her first novel, The Devil’s Tree, a young adult ghost story, was published in 2019. Her second novel, Ghost Hunters: Bones in the Wall, the first in a middle grade series, was published in 2020 (iii,iv).

Susan’s short film, “The Cask,” won a Platinum Remi Award for best short adaptation at WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival in 2017, and her short film, “The Murdering Kind,” premiered at Shriekfest Horror Film Festival in 2019. McCauley sometimes partners as a screenwriter with Academy Award winner Barney Burman (v), who directed “The Murdering Kind” short.
