Susi Tegen is the CEO for the Australian National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA),[1] business leader, educator, speaker, and advocate for the health and health training for the rural and remote populations of Australia.[2][3][4]

During her career she has worked in SA, rural Northern Territory, Victoria and New South Wales in Australia, and in Vienna, Austria.

Education[edit]

Susi holds a BA from the University of Adelaide. Her postgraduate qualifications include a Masters in Business Administration from Melbourne University, Melbourne Business School , a postgraduate Diploma of Education from the University of New England, a Graduate Certificate of Change Management (GCCM), from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM at the University of NSW), and a Diploma of Rural Leadership from the James Cook University (JCU).[5]

With her extensive work experience, Susi is recognized as a Fellow  of the Governance Institute of Australia (FGIA), Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FAICD) and as a Fellow by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (FARLF).[5]

She also holds various vocational qualifications (Australian VET Framework) in the areas of Farm Safety, Adult Education, Risk Management, Finance, and Farm Management.[5]

Career[edit]

Tegen's career represents her skills in strategic partnerships, leadership, and public relations across various domains, including health, diplomacy, education, agribusiness, primary industry and economic development.

Since October 2022, she’s led the National Rural Health Alliance (NRHA) of Australia as its CEO. In the health sector she has also held leadership roles for the  Medical Technology Association of Australia and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmology.[5][6][7]

Beyond the health sector Susi has held the position of Austrian Consul (Österreichische Konsulin) for  South Australia and the Northern Territory since 2014.[8]

From 2019 to 2022 she was Executive Consultant with the  Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) collaborating with the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia, the Australian Indigenous Doctors Association, and the University of Adelaide Rural Clinical School managing strategic partnerships, public relations, and organizational development to advance medical education and indigenous community development.[5]

Tegen served as Chair, Facilitator, and Mentor for women’s business and coaching network Behind Closed Doors, out of Adelaide, South Australia from 2016 to 2020.[5][9]

In the sectors of agribusiness, primary industry and investments, she held the role of Managing Director/Executive Director at FREE Eyre Limited for 3 years until 2009. Tegen was CEO for the Limestone Coast Division of General Practice from 1997-2006, and was Principal Consultant in Education for SA Department of Primary Industries and region from 1987-1999.[5]

Susi is also a recognized working educator for the Medical Technology Association of Australia by the Australian Department of Education.[10]

Boards, Committees and Advisory[edit]

Susi continues to make contributions to the health sector through her engagement in various committee, non-executive, and advisory positions. Her current roles include serving as a member of the Health Workforce Scope of Practice Review Committee and the National Rural Health Strategy Advisory with the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.[3][11]

She holds a non-executive director position at the Australian Orthopedic Association and held a previous position on the Federal Training Selection and Rural Health Equity Committee] until November 2023.[3][12][13]

Tegen is an active member of the Autism CRC and has contributed to the Aged Care Working Group of the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority since September 2022.[14][11]

In her commitment to medical education and healthcare strategy, she has been part of the Specialist International Medical Graduate Committee at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons , and served on the Federal Council and the Finance Audit and Risk Committee of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine to November 2023. Her advisory roles also include Medicare review panels.[3][5][7]

International Experience[edit]

Susi holds the position of Austrian Consul (Österreichische Konsulin) for  South Australia and the Northern Territory, supporting Austrian citizens, promoting Austria to SA and NT community and fostering strategic partnerships between Austria and SA and NT.[8]

Awards and Achievements[edit]

Tegen's achievements include the South Australia Great Award in Medicine and Health and the Nokia Business Innovation Award at the Telstra SA Business Women's Awards in 2009. That same year she was honored with (formerly Agrifutures Australia) the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rural Women’s Award.[15][16][9]
