Suvidutt Sundaram
Suvidutt Sundaram also known as Suvidutt M.S. is an Advocate-on-Record (AOR) who practices at the Supreme Court of India. He is the Founder and Managing Partner of the reputed corporate law firm named Outsay Legal, which has several branches across India.[1]
Notable Cases
He has filed cases on behalf of and represented Pandalam Royals of Sabarimala and another for a NGO named People for Dharma in the Sabarimala temple women entry Case in the Supreme Court and is now pending before the Constitution Bench.[2]
A Writ Petition challenging the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 was filed by him representing a Member of Parliament named T.N. Prathapan from Kerala.[3]
He also filed the Writ Petition in the Supreme Court to decriminalise adultery law in India by challenging the provision of Section 497 of Indian Penal Code.[4]
A Writ Petition seeking reservation for two Scheduled Tribes, ‘Limboo’ and ‘Tamang’ in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly was filed by Suvidutt M.S. in Supreme Court seeking direction to the Centre to take appropriate steps to amend the provisions of the Representation of the People Act to provide reservation to the above-mentioned tribes.[5]
A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed by him representing Academy of Family Physicians of India (AFPI) that sought direction to Medical Council of India (MCI) and Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to consider starting a separate department of family medicine in all medical hospitals across India.[6]
He filed a plea in the Supreme Court seeking expulsion of Rohingya community that is currently living in India as refugees.[7]
In the wake of demolition drive in the Jagannath Temple at Puri, he had filed a Contempt Petition against the Puri District Collector for wilful disobedience of the order of the Apex Court.[8]
He had filed a plea for an NGO named Indic Collective for lifting the ban on the fire cracker imposed by the Supreme Court.[9]
The case that was referred to Constitution Bench to examine whether the controversial disparaging remarks made by electricity Minister M.M. Mani against women, individuals and government officials will come within the ambit of free speech was filed by Suvidutt M.S.[10]
He had moved Supreme Court on behalf of former Speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly named V.M. Sudheeran against the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government for violating Supreme Court ban of bar hotels existing across highways.[11]
Education
Suvidutt Sundaram has done a five years integrated BA-LLB course and graduated in the year 2006 from Govt. Law College, Thrissur. Thereafter, he did his Masters in Constitutional Law (LLM) from Amity University, Noida. A lesser known fact is that he also has a Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication (MAJM) to his credit.
Career
He started his illustrious career as a Junior Advocate by joining an AOR law firm named Nuli & Nuli that is based in Delhi. Thereafter, he had worked with a corporate law firm named DKJ Legal Solutions Group.[12] Since 2012, he has been practicing independently and founded Outsay Legal, a full service Indian corporate law firm that comprises of practising lawyers, Chartered Accountants and experts who are specialised in varied areas, offering litigation, transactional, regulatory, advisory, dispute resolution and tax services.[13]
For his contributions to medical laws and family medicine by way of litigation and research, he was awarded Family Medicine Advocacy Award 2019 by the Academy of Family Physicians of India (AFPI).[14]
He has drafted Lok Sabha Private Members Bills, namely the Anglo-Indian Welfare Bill, 2016 and The Waste Management and Recycling Bill, 2016 which were introduced by former BJP Member of Parliament named Richard Hay.[15]
Academics
Suvidutt Sundaram is a Visiting Faculty in many law schools and universities across India. Several research papers have been co-authored by him with his PhD guide named (Prof.) Dr.Aditya Tomer on hate speech and election laws. Among others, notable are Cyberhate in India – Regulation and Intermediary Liability, Hate Speech in India – A Conundrum to Crack, and Hate Speech - A Catalyst for Identity Politics.
