Suvrat Kakoti.[1] (born 13 April 1993), also known as SUV[2], is an Assamese film director, screenwriter, producer, and editor. He directed the 2023 crime thriller Sri Raghupati[3], which became the first Assamese film to cross ₹10 crore at the box office, and the 2024 crime comedy Bidurbhai[4]
Early life
Kakoti grew up in Golaghat, Assam. His parents did local theatre, which put him around performance early. Formal film school wasn't an option financially, so he picked up the craft shooting weddings — learning editing, framing, and storytelling without a classroom. He's pointed to 3 Idiots (2009) as the film that made him want to do this seriously. He completed his higher secondary education before entering the industry. He now lives in Guwahati.
Career
He started building an audience online. The web series Illegal (2020) got some attention, but it was Bidurbhai[5] (2021) — a rural comedy-drama about friendship and small-town life — that spread fast enough to give him real visibility.
That visibility led to actor Ravi Sarma[6] offering him Sri Raghupati[7]. The film, a crime thriller about women trafficking in Assam, released on 5 June 2023 on a budget of around ₹2 crore. It collected approximately ₹11.31 crore — breaking the record set by Ratnakar (2019) and becoming the first Assamese film to cross ₹10 crore.
Bidurbhai the feature came next, releasing on 19 July 2024. Kakoti directed, wrote, and edited it himself. The film takes on microfinance fraud, government scheme corruption, and healthcare failures — wrapped inside a crime comedy. It was produced through Rootstock Entertainments Private Limited, the production company he runs with Arnab Hazarika. A Hindi-language release was later announced.
