Suyeon Kang
Suyeon Kang (born 1989 in South Korea) is a Korean-Australian violinist.
She is widely regarded as one of the most versatile musicians of her generation and for her expressive, soulful interpretative qualities.[1][2] In recent years she has been appointed to several important roles in performance and academia in the classical music world.
She has been based in Germany since 2007.
Awards
Kang is a previous major prize winner of several international awards: Michael Hill International Violin Competition[3] (becoming the first Australian to receive top honors in the history of the contest),[4][5] Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition,[6] Buenos Aires, Bayreuth,[7] etc. Prior to her relocation to Europe she was named the grand prize winner of the Australian Young Performer of the Year [8][9] at the age of 16.
She is also a special prize winner at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and the Leopold Mozart Competition in Augsburg.[7][10][11]
Activity
Kang's diverse musical work has to led to her experience as a soloist, chamber musician, arranger, orchestral leader and pedagogue.
She is a founding member of the string trio Trio Boccherini,[12][13][14] and in 2023 became the newest and youngest member of one of the world's leading string quartets, the Belcea Quartet.[15][16][17][18][19][20]
She previously served as concertmaster of the Kammerakademie Potsdam [21][22](2019-2025) and was a long standing member of the Camerata Bern (2017-2024).[23]
Since 2025 she serves on the International Artistic Committee of Musethica.[24]
Teaching
As of 2026 Kang serves as Professor of Chamber Music at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen,[25][26][27] and also maintains a violin class at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler in Berlin.[28]
She was previously a long-term (2015-2021) teaching assistant of Antje Weithaas.[25]
