Svati Chakravarty Bhatkal
Svati Chakravarty Bhatkal is a filmmaker, documentarian, writer, lyricist, and researcher based in Mumbai.[1]
From 2012 to 2014, Bhatkal was the Co-Director and Head of Field Research of three seasons of Satyamev Jayate (English: Truth Alone Triumphs)[2], a television talk show hosted by actor Aamir Khan, which addressed social issues in India. In its debut month of May 2012, it became the most talked about show on social media worldwide.[3]
Chakravarty Bhatkal has also directed Rubaru Roshni, a documentary that explores the power of forgiveness through three first-person real-life stories.[4] The documentary released on Star Plus and Hotstar on January 26, 2019[5] and is also available to stream worldwide on Netflix.[6]
Early life and career
Chakravarty Bhatkal was born to Indian parents and raised in Mumbai. She studied Economics and started her professional life as a trainee reporter with the Free Press Journal, in the final year of her graduation.[7] Here, she covered the civic, education, and Mantralaya beat, while pursuing a degree in law from an evening college.[8]
In the following years, Chakravarty Bhatkal gained further experience as an instructional designer with Tata Interactive Systems, acquisitions editor with Popular Prakashan (an English and Marathi publication house), and consultant with branding agency Chlorophyll.[9]
She also co-wrote the screenplay of Zokkomon (2011), Disney Studio India's first live-action film in the country.[10]
Chakravarty Bhatkal is married to Satyajit Bhatkal, who directed the TV show Satyamev Jayate[11] and is currently the CEO of Paani Foundation[12].
Satyamev Jayate (TV series)
From 2012 to 2014, Chakravarty Bhatkal worked as the Co-Director and Head of Field Research for the Indian television show, Satyamev Jayate.[13] Hosted by actor Aamir Khan, the show focused on addressing social issues in India and was aired on Star India Network and Doordarshan.[14] It comprised three seasons with a total of 25 episodes.[15]
During the research period for the show, she made a documentary on the issue of sex-selective abortion (female foeticide).[16] This experience was “eye-opening” for her and she discovered “how little control mothers had over their wombs.”[17] This issue was addressed in the pilot episode of the show, which was telecast on May 6, 2012.[18] It found a place in 8 out of 10 top trends on Twitter India, while Aamir Khan trended worldwide.[19]
After this episode was aired, a fast-track court was set up in Rajasthan to expedite the trials in female foeticide cases.[20] Additionally, 65 licenses of Medical Termination of Pregnancy centres were suspended in Madhya Pradesh, for not submitting their final reports.[21]
The second episode of the show addressed the issue of child sexual abuse. After it was aired, Childline's national helpline, which was featured on the show, was flooded with calls.[22] This episode also urged the Parliament of India to approve a bill for the protection of children. On May 22, 2012, the Parliament passed the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (2012).[23] In season 2 of the show, after the episode titled 'Fighting Rape' was aired, India's Union Health Ministry drafted fresh guidelines for treating rape survivors and asked hospitals to set up a designated room for forensic and medical examination.[24]
Season 1 of the show received over a billion impressions online.[25] In its first 7 episodes alone, the show reached out to an “unprecedented 47 crore people” in India according to a press release by Star TV, maintaining a robust rating of 4+ TVR.[26]
Rubaru Roshni
From 2016 to 2019, Chakravarty Bhatkal worked on researching and directing Rubaru Roshni, a feature-length documentary on the power of forgiveness, produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao.[27] The documentary is available in seven languages.[28] It features stories of three survivors who forgave the killers of their families, and covers perspectives and narratives from both sides.[29]
The film received positive reviews. “These tales will shake you up,” wrote a critic in the Indian Express.[30] “Rubaru Roshni is powerful enough to change your life,” said the National Herald.[31] Members of India's film industry also appreciated the film online. Filmmaker Karan Johar called it a life-changing experience.[32] Actor Swara Bhasker said, "In the last few years, I have never seen a film like Rubaru Roshini which impacts you at such a deep and personal level.[33]"
In June 2019, the film was also screened at Docs Ireland[34], as part of the Belfast Film Festival.[35]
Paani Foundation
From 2018-2019, Chakravarty Bhatkal led the social media and digital communications team at the Paani Foundation,[36] a non-profit set up in 2016 with the mission of eradicating drought in Maharashtra.[37]
