Akhandamandaleshwar Sri Sri Swami Swarupananda Paramhansa Dev (27 December 1887 – 21 April 1984), also known as Babamani and born Bankim Chandra Gangopadhyay, was an Indian Hindu spiritual leader and social reformer. He is regarded by his followers as the founder of the Character Building Movement (1914) and of several associated ashrams across Bengal and Assam.[1]
Life and work
Swarupananda was born in Chandpur (then part of Comilla District, British India; now in Bangladesh).[1] He became known for emphasizing discipline, simplicity, and education as spiritual practices. In 1914 he initiated what was described as a “Character Building Movement,” encouraging young people to adopt ethical conduct and social service.[1]
During his lifetime, he inspired the establishment of a number of ashrams, including the Pupunki Ashram in Dhanbad and centres in Kolkata and Assam.[1] His teachings were circulated in works such as Aapanar Jan (1946)[2] and Guru (1946).[3]
Legacy
After his death in Kolkata in 1984, the organizations he founded continued to attract devotees across eastern India.[1] Public commemorations remain part of his legacy: a national-level recitation competition of his writings was hosted in Silchar in 2023,[4] and a five-day birth anniversary celebration took place in Guwahati in December 2024, drawing thousands of participants.[5]
His movement’s institutions have also been reported on in the regional and national press, including The Telegraph and The Times of India, in coverage of organizational activities and leadership disputes following his passing.[6][7]
