Swamp Democrats
It has been suggested that this article be merged into Democratic Party of Arkansas. (Discuss) Proposed since December 2018. |
Swamp Democrats were one of the major divisions of the Democratic Party in Arkansas during the New South period of Democrat dominance in the state. The area of strength for Swamp Democrats was the flooded timber and marshy areas of eastern Arkansas and the Grand Prairie section of the state. This was the region of the slave-holding plantations and Swamp Democrats generally voted in the interests of Arkansas planters and merchants. Their rivals were the Hill Democrats.
