Swayam Prakash
Swayam Prakash (born 1987) is an Indian immunogeneticist, and a scientist known for his works on vaccine development & research. He is currently working as a Assistant Research Professor at the University of California, Irvine.[1].
Early life and education
Swayam Prakash was born in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India. Swayam received a Master of Science degree from the Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. He received his Ph.D. degree after pursuing his research in the field of Histocompatibility and Transplantation Immunology from the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Lucknow. As part of his training, from 2018 to 2023 Swayam completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Immunology at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine. Prior to joining the University of California he served as a senior Research associate at the University Hospital Essen (Universitätsklinikum Essen).
Career
Swayam's career started at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine as a Research Scientist in 2023 and subsequently as a Assistant Research Professor in 2024 at the Department of Ophthalmology.
Selected Research
His research from Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences examined the molecular profiling of killer immunoglobulin-like receptors and their HLA Class-I ligands in end stage renal disease[2][3][4]. His subsequent research focused on vaccine development and immunogenetics, particularly developing immunotherapeutic strategies against ocular and genital herpes simplex infection and SARS-CoV-2 infection [5]. At University of California, Irvine School of Medicine, he has led projects developing multi-epitope and large-sequence "Universal" Pan-Coronavirus vaccines [6] [7][8][9][10][11][12]. He has also contributed to identifying HLA-A*0201-restricted CD8+ cytotoxic T-lymphocyte epitopes from herpes simplex virus tegument proteins as foundations for a new class of human herpes vaccines[13][14][15]
Awards and Honors
Swayam is an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and has published 77 original research articles and review papers in the fields of vaccine development, and immunogenetics. His publications from the last decade have garnered over 54,000 citations with an h-index of 30 putting him among the highest cited researchers in the world. He has been awarded in 2025 with the prestigious 20/20 Society Grant.
