Sweet XVI is the second EP by American singer Mýa. Her second EP, it was released on April 21, 2014 worldwide via digital media store iTunes, marking Harrison's fifth independently released project through her own label imprint Planet 9 via INgrooves. The six-track EP commemorates the release of her debut studio album Mýa (1998) and sixteenth anniversary in the entertainment industry. Its release was preceded by its first and only single, the Eric Bellinger-assisted "Same Page."

Described as "more up-tempo" than its predecessor, the EP With Love, Sweet XVI is intended to celebrate not only Harrison's journey thus far, but be an indication of a new path as she reinvents her career and gears up to tour and work on her ninth studio project. Production on Sweet XVI was primarily handled by longtime friend and frequent collaborator Yonni with additional contributions from musicians Antione Hart and Nate "Impact" Jolley as well as her in-house team of producers The Alliance. Just as Harrison did on previous projects, she used existing material she personally pulled from her archive of unreleased music.

Background and release[edit]

In February 2014, Mýa released her very first extended play titled With Love. Following its release, With Love received critical acclaim from media publications such as Noisey, The Los Angeles Times, Complex and Billboard.[1][2][3][4]Approximately, two months later, in a press release Mýa announced a follow-up extended play titled, Sweet XVI which featured six brand new songs.[1] Beginning on April 16, 2014, Sweet XVI was available for pre-order.[1] To celebrate and coommerate the anniversary of her debut album Mýa (1998), Sweet XVI was released on April 21, 2014.[1]

Development and composition[edit]

Taking an active approach like with all her independent projects, Mýa served as executive producer for Sweet XVI which entailed her scouting for producers, songwriters, arranging the extended play tracklisting and keep track of the accounting.[5] For Sweet XVI, in an interview with OK! magazine, Mýa explained that Sweet XVI wasn't a summary of her artistic side, but just the vibe for Spring she wanted to bring out musically.[6] During the same interview, she revealed the songs featured on her extended plays are pulled from the archive of existing material, commenting,"I have hundreds of songs and an archive of unreleased music."[6]

Featuring six brand new songs, Sweet XVI is a blend of classic and new sounds.[7] The extended play's opening track, "Superwoman" is an inspirational, cautionary song for those who don't think the singer doesn't go hard in the paint.[7][8] It followed by the catchy, retro sounding "Cherry Lips" which incorporates an old school hip-hop flavored beat.[7][8] Next up, the Eric Bellinger-assisted steamy duet, "Same Page" which serves as the extended play's third track.[7][9] The racy, sensual ode, "Right Now" serves as the extended play's fourth track, while "M.O.N.E.Y," a synth heavy power anthem banger serves as the extended play's fifth track.[7][10] The final track, the closer, "Unbreakable" is testimonial track which utilizes an uptempo pop friendly sound heavy with piano to convey the singer's message of perseverance and positivity.[7]

Singles[edit]

Sweet XVI spawned the first and only single, "Same Page" which premiered via online media outlet Complex.[11]
