Swift Sensors, Inc. is a company providing a cloud wireless sensor system for industrial IoT. [1][2] The system is comprised of small wireless sensors, which communicate with an on-premise bridge; the bridge then communicates to a cloud data center. Users monitor the data via a dashboard, as well as receive alerts.[1]

History

Swift Sensors was founded in May 2015 by Dean Drako, Executive Chairman, and former founder and CEO of Barracuda Networks; Sam Cece, President and CEO; and Kelly Jones (CTO).[3] The company stated the system eliminated the need for sensor cabling and on-premise software data acquisition systems.[4]

The company and its first product, the Swift Sensors Cloud Wireless Sensor System, were first publicly announced in December 2016, at which time the company had wireless sensor module types for sensors for temperature, humidity, vibration, motion, activity, location, electric voltage, and current.[1][5] The cloud sensor system is used for monitoring equipment and processes, doing predictive maintenance, and complying with regulations.[2][6][4] Early customers included Kraft Heinz, Sysco Foods, Subway, and McDonalds.[7][8]

In April 2017, Swift Sensor announced a major partnership with Eagle Eye Networks to deliver cloud-based sensor and video surveillance for applications across multiple industries; by deploying both systems together, users could check video based on sensor data.[9] [10]

In March 2018, Swift Sensors announced the ability for users to create customized dashboards with multiple user-defined views of data streams for the identification of patterns and correlations using big data analytics.[11][12] Language support was expanded to include Danish, German, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, in addition to the existing English and Japanese.[13] In July 2018, the company announced a manufacturing analytics dashboard to improve operational efficiency by providing real-time views of productivity, utilization and compliance.[14]

Also in 2018, the company added sensors for measuring ammonia and carbon monoxide,[4] and stated that its cloud wireless sensor system could be linked with other applications via API.[10] The company added Iguazu as a distribution partner in Japan.[4][10]

Products

Swift Sensors Cloud Wireless Sensor System is a cloud-based wireless sensor system that communicates with an on-site bridge which then transmits the encrypted data to Swift Sensors’ cloud data center. The matchbook-size[5] sensors transmit the relevant data via either Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) or RF[2] [15] to a Swift Sensors Bridge, a small appliance that then connects the sensors to the Swift Sensors Cloud using Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and/or cellular communication.[16]

The system has bidirectional communications between sensor node and bridge, and bridge to cloud.[17] The sensor and bridge are each powered by a battery; the sensor can store data for up to 72 hours if it loses communication with the bridge.[18][19] The system uses 256-bit encryption, time stamps and a closed network with only one access point and dual firewalls to tie in to legacy system from which users can extract data.[17]

Customers view data and control the sensor system in real-time, using it for monitoring and analytics,[6] such as setting a high- or low-temperature threshold and receiving a warning notification by email, text message or phone call any time conditions exceed the threshold.[20]
