Switch (musician)
Luke Thornton (born December 12 1992), better known by his stage name Switch, is a Canadian rapper.
Early Life[edit]
Switch was born on December 12, 1992 in Victoria, British Columbia. He has lived in various southern Vancouver Island communities in his life.
Switch first started with music at age 9, and began recording music at age 11.
Music Career[edit]
In 2009, Switch performed for the first time at the Francis Kelsey Secondary School talent show. He performed alongside Will Degroot to an auditorium of 1,200 students.
Switch has since performed over 115 live shows, and has toured through Alberta and British Columbia.
2015 – 2018: What Am I Here For? Substance Abuse, I Didn’t Think I’d Make It, Dirt on My Hands[edit]
Switch released a new album every year from 2015 to 2018. At the time, he was focused on putting out music, and building an online fan base. He performed numerous shows during this period, only to find that he was spending more money to perform than he was being paid.
With a growing fan base, and years of experience behind him, Switch decided to focus his efforts on creating music rather than performing for free.
2019: Indignant, Sonic Therapy, Where Am I?, and Western Canadian Tours[edit]
In 2019, Switch released three projects: Indignant, Sonic Therapy, and Where Am I?. Each project was recorded with Independent Generation studios in Nanaimo, B.C.
Switch headlined several shows that year, culminating in a Western Canadian Tour for his album Indignant, and a British Columbia tour for his album Where Am I?. A month prior to the Where Am I? Tour, Switch tore ligaments in his heel and ankle. Switch completed the entire tour with his foot in an air cast.
2020: Run With Scissors[edit]
2020 saw the release of Switch’s album, Run With Scissors. The album features artists Smoke DZA, Slaine, and 730 EDot. Switch received funding from FACTOR Canada to produce the album.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of his 2020 Western Canada tour, and delayed the release of his EP, You Shouldn’t Have.
Musical style and influences[edit]
Switch’s musical style ranges from boom-bap, to new-age. His delivery combines complex wordplay, multi-syllable rhyme schemes, and catchy choruses.
Switch covers a variety of topics in his music, but a common theme is mental health. Self awareness, addiction, anxiety, obsession, and uncertainty are themes that often arise in his music.
He has collaborated with notable rappers such as Slaine, Smoke DZA, Merkules, Snak the Ripper, and Moka Only.
