Swoon1
Swoon (also known as Swoon Editions) is a British online luxury furniture retailer.[1]. The company was founded in 2012 by Brian Harrison and Debbie Williamson[2][3] and operates from London as an online-only business which releases new designs in limited batches every day[4]. The company has received financial backing from Octopus Investments and Index Ventures[5][6].
History
- March 22nd, 2012: Swoon was founded by Brian Harrison and Debbie Williamson[7][8]
- May 28th, 2013: Swoon raised an undisclosed amount of funding in a seed round[9]
- October 7th, 2013: Swoon raised £1.2 million in funding in a seed round[10]
- July 2014: Claire Hollinghurst was appointed as CFO[11]
- July 21st, 2014: Swoon received £4 million in a funding round[12][13][14]
- December 1st, 2014: Ciaran Rooney was appointed to the Swoon senior management team as CTO[15]
- 2017: Swoon raised £15 million in an investment round[16]
- November 2017: Adam Woodhouse was appointed as CCO[17]
- January 2018: Steve Beard was appointed as CTO[18]
- March 2018: Swoon partnered with Debenhams. The department store opened a dedicated space in its Westfield White City branch in London, offering a selection of Swoon’s dinnerware, lighting and furniture designs.[19]
- March 2018: Swoon underwent a rebrand, positioning the brand as being “for the home obsessed.” Meanwhile, the brand logo and trading name changed from “Swoon Editions” to “Swoon.”[20]
Operations
Swoon sells furniture, home accessories and lighting[21]. Swoon’s business model sees much of the furniture supply chain eliminated, shortening the distance between customers and manufacturers[22]. Each design that is sourced by Swoon starts as a limited run. If the item is popular it goes into regular production.[23]
Swoon produces their furniture in many different countries, including the UK, Poland, Estonia, Vietnam, India and China[24][25]. Their business operations are located in London[26] but they also have offices in India and Vietnam[27].
Swoon have also launched pop-up stores in various locations, including Shoreditch[28][29], Covent Garden[30], Birmingham[31] and Brighton[32], as well as a partnership with department store Debenhams[33].
Recognition
- In 2015, Swoon was a finalist in three categories at the Startups Awards; the Women in Business award (which they won)[34], People’s Champion Award[35] and Business Retailer of the Year[36]
- Swoon was one of the 26 companies chosen by Tech City UK in February 2017 for its Future Fifty program, which supports 50 of the UK's rising tech stars[37]
