Sylvan Marine
Sylvan Marine is an American pontoon-boat brand owned by Smoker Craft Inc. and manufactured in New Paris, Indiana..[1][2]. The brand traces its history to the Sylvan Boat Company, established in 1948 in Wolcottville, Indiana[2][3]. Sylvan originally produced aluminum houseboats and pontoon boats before becoming part of the group of marine brands operated by Smoker Craft Inc[2][3]
Over the course of its history, Sylvan expanded beyond pontoons, producing fishing boats, utility boats, runabouts, fiberglass boats and deck boats.[4]. The company later returned to a more focused pontoon lineup, and by the early 2020s, Sylvan had become one of Smoker Craft’s largest individual product segments[5].
History
The Sylvan Boat Company was established in 1948 near Sylvan Lake in Wolcottville, Indiana[2][6]. According to Smoker Craft Inc.’s company history, Sylvan became an early manufacturer of pontoon boats with colored aluminum side panels, commonly known as pontoon fencing[2]. The company also credits Sylvan with early work on higher-performance pontoon designs[2][7].
Harold Schrock purchased Sylvan in 1969 after selling Starcraft, the boat company previously operated by his family[8][9]. A 2022 profile published by Soundings Trade Only also identifies 1969 as the year Schrock acquired the Sylvan Boat Company[1]. At the time, Sylvan was developing and manufacturing aluminum houseboats and pontoons in Wolcottville[9][1].
Published sources give different accounts of Sylvan’s later integration with Smoker Craft. A 2019 Soundings Trade Only history states that Smoker Craft acquired Sylvan in the mid-1970s, while the company history and a later independent profile state that Harold Schrock purchased Sylvan in 1969[10][3]. A Smoker Craft inc. corporate timeline separately dates the acquisition to 1975[11].
During the 1970s, Harold Schrock also acquired a controlling interest in Smoker Craft. Sylvan and Smoker Craft then operated under related ownership involving the Schrock and Smoker families[12][13]. Several former Starcraft employees joined the Sylvan operation, and Peter Barrett later said some early Sylvan boats resembled Starcraft models because many of the workers had followed his grandfather to the new venture[13].
Sylvan historically produced a much wider range of boats than its modern pontoon-focused lineup. Its archived catalogs document aluminum fishing boats, utility boats, runabouts, fiberglass boats, deck boats and pontoons[14][15]. During the 1980s and early 1990s, the company also used the “Spaceship” and “Spacedeck” names for several recreational models[15][16].
The Schrock and Smoker families repurchased Starcraft Marine from Brunswick Corporation[2][17]. Sylvan, Starcraft and Smoker Craft were later brought together under shared family ownership, and the companies’ manufacturing operations were eventually consolidated in New Paris about a decade later[17][1]. Sylvan became one of five principal brands operated by Smoker Craft Inc., alongside Smoker Craft, Starcraft, Sunchaser and Starweld[1][18].
Although Sylvan continued offering fishing and utility boats into the early 2010s, the brand gradually became more closely associated with pontoons. The 2012 fishing catalog stats that Sylvan made fishing, pontoon and utility boats through 2012[19].
By the early 2020s, Sylvan had become one of Smoker Craft Inc.’s largest individual product segments[1][20]. In a 2022 industry interview, company executive Peter Barrett described Sylvan Pontoons as the group’s strongest product when the brands are compared by individual market segment[1].
Historical product lines
Sylvan’s product range changed considerably throughout its history[21][22]. Catalogs from the 1980s show the company selling pontoon boats alongside aluminum fishing boats and recreational runabouts[22][23][16]. The company also offered boats under the Spaceship name, including models that appeared in pontoon, fishing and runabout catalogs[22][23][16].
During the 1990s, Sylvan offered aluminum boats, fiberglass boats and pontoons under the same brand[24][25]. Its 1992 catalog collection included separate publications for fishing, fiberglass, aluminum and pontoons[24]. In 1993, Sylvan combined its aluminum, fiberglass, and pontoon options into one catalog. This was followed by a broader "All Boats" edition later in 1994[24][25].
Sylvan continued producing fishing, pontoon, runabout and deck-boat lines throughout the 2000s[24]. The company’s 2005 catalog archive includes separate fishing and pontoon publications, with the pontoon catalog also covering runabouts and deck boats[24][26]. Fishing and pontoon catalogs remained separate through 2012[24][27][28].
Products
Sylvan’s modern product range is pontoon boats designed for cruising, fishing, entertaining and watersports[29][30][31]. The brand offers two-tube and tritoon configurations, with performance packages and lifting strakes[30][32]. Available layouts include wrap around lounge seating, fishing stations, rear-facing loungers, convertible seating, and bar seating[31][33][34][35].
The current lineup includes the M Series, G Series, L Series, X Series, Mirage, R Series and A Series[36]. The series cover a range of boat sizes, seating arrangements and engine capacities[36][37][38]. Some models are intended primarily for cruising and entertaining, while others combine lounge seating with fishing equipment or watersports features[39][40][41].
Several current Sylvan lines use the company’s SPX third-tube performance package[42][43][44][45]. Depending on the model, the package may include a center pontoon tube, lifting strakes, under-deck protection and support for higher-horsepower outboard engines[44][30].
Notable models and layouts
The Mirage series has been one of Sylvan’s staple models since 2007[46][47]. Models in the series have been offered in cruising, fishing and watersports configurations, with layouts ranging from traditional lounge arrangements to rear-facing and convertible seating designs[46][47][48]. One of the series’ best-known layouts was the Mirage 8524 DLZ Bar[48][49]. Its rear seating area could be changed from a continuous lounge into a social area with a bar or table surface[48][49][49]. The model received a Minneapolis Innovation Award in 2019[49][49].[50]
The convertible layout later became the subject of a Smoker Craft Inc. patent[51][52]. U.S. Patent No. 11,148,761 describes seating components that can be moved independently between seating and table positions[52][53]. The patent names Michael Farmer as the inventor and Smoker Craft Inc. as the assignee[52][53].
Hull technology and innovations
Sylvan developed a pontoon-tube design marketed as Revolutionary Planing Technology, commonly abbreviated as RPT[54][28][55]. The system received an honorable mention at the 2008 Miami Innovation Awards[56][57]. The NMMA archive identifies the entry as Sylvan Marine’s “Revolutionary Planning Technology,” although company materials use the term “Planing.”[28][56][57]
The design was covered by U.S. Patent No. 7,798,088, titled “Planing pontoon tube.”[58][59] Smoker Craft Inc. filed the patent application in 2008, and the patent was granted in 2010[58][59]. The listed inventors are Phillip L. Hoover, Terry L. Hoover, William G. Price and Donn R. Huber[58][59]. Unlike a conventional fully rounded pontoon tube, the patented design uses a semicircular upper section and angled lower planing surfaces that meet full-length chines[58][59]. The tube also includes a shaped nose cone, internal watertight bulkheads and a keel that provides directional control and protection against impact and abrasion[58][59].
The patent states that the lower running surfaces provide lift and directional stability while the pontoon moves through the water[60]. Sylvan and outside boat reviewers have associated the design with quicker planing and more responsive handling, although those performance descriptions should be attributed rather than treated as independently proven measurements[61][62].
Sylvan also uses the SPX name for several three-tube performance packages[63][64][65]. Current Sylvan materials describe SPX systems as including a center performance tube, lifting strakes and under-deck skinning[63][64]. Some versions also include hydraulic steering and larger fuel systems to support higher-horsepower engines[63][66][67].
Sylvan introduced a convertible rear-lounge layout on the Mirage 8524 DLZ Bar[68][69]. The seating arrangement could be changed into a bar or table area, allowing the same part of the boat to serve as either seating or a social space[68][69][70]. NMMA judges recognized the layout for converting a large aft lounge into a social area[69][70].
The design has a priority date of January 24, 2019[71]. Smoker Craft Inc. filed the full patent application in January 2020, and U.S. Patent No. 11,148,761 was granted in October 2021[71].[72]
Smoker Craft Inc. holds patents covering two technologies associated with Sylvan pontoon boats.
U.S. Patent No. 7,798,088 covers the planing pontoon-tube construction associated with Sylvan’s RPT system[73][74]. The patent describes a chambered aluminum tube with angled lower running surfaces, full-length chines, a shaped nose section and a protective keel.[73]
U.S. Patent No. 11,148,761 covers the convertible bar-lounger system associated with the Sylvan Mirage DLZ Bar layout[75][76][77]. The system allows two seating components to be changed independently between seat and table positions[75][77].
Awards and recognition
In 2008, Sylvan Marine’s RPT system received an honorable mention at the Miami Innovation Awards[78][79]. The award listing placed the system in the personal-watercraft and jet-boat portion of the archived results, despite its use on Sylvan pontoon boats[78][79].
In 2019, the Sylvan Mirage 8524 DLZ Bar received the Minneapolis Innovation Award in the pontoon-boat category[80][81]. The official award record lists Smoker Craft Inc. as the entrant but identifies the winning product as the Mirage 8524 DLZ Bar[80]. Judges highlighted the aft lounge’s ability to convert into a bar and social area[80][81].
Sylvan Pontoon received NMMA Marine Industry Customer Satisfaction Index Awards for the 2019 and 2020 program years in the pontoon-boat category[82][83]. Recipients were required to achieve independently measured customer-satisfaction scores of at least 90 percent based on surveys of customers who purchased new boats during the applicable year[82][83][84]
Manufacturing
Sylvan boats are manufactured at Smoker Craft Inc.’s campus in New Paris, Indiana.[85][86]. A 2022 Soundings Trade Only profile described the property as covering 144 acres and containing 32 buildings with nearly 900,000 square feet of manufacturing, transportation and storage space[85]. The campus also manufactures boats under the Smoker Craft, Starcraft, Sunchaser and Starweld brands[85][86]. Smoker Craft Inc. previously operated several satellite manufacturing facilities before consolidating much of its production in New Paris[87][85][86]
Sylvan pontoon construction includes the forming and welding of aluminum pontoon tubes, followed by the installation of deck structures, side panels, furniture, consoles and other equipment[88]. Some pontoon-tube manufacturing at the New Paris campus has been automated, although the broader robotic-welding project applies to Smoker Craft Inc.’s pontoon production rather than Sylvan alone[88][89][90]
