Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communication

Symbiosis Institute of Media and Communications[1], (SIMC-PG, Pune), is a constituent institute of Symbiosis International Deemed University (SIU). SIMC was included in the ambit of the Symbiosis International University in the year 2006. Located at the Lavale, Pune Campus of SIU, SIMC is a higher education institution for Brand & Marketing Communication skills for students in India.

History[edit]

Established in 1990 as the Symbiosis Institute of Journalism & Communication (SIJC) it was later renamed to Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication in 1998. In the year 2007, taking into consideration the changing needs of the industry, it was renamed as 'Symbiosis Institute of Media & Communication'.[2] In 2016, SIMC Pune celebrated its twenty fifth year anniversary which was gatecrashed by Aamir Khan and his then costar Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra as part of their promotion round for their film Dangal.[3]

Academics[edit]

SIMC offers post-graduate degree programmes in the area of Journalism and Creative Pursuits MA (Mass Communication) and Managing Creative Business MBA (Communication Management). Both the courses are two year full time residential programmes. Admission to the courses is through the national entrance exam conducted by Symbiosis International University, called SNAP[4]. The average pay package for the institute as reported by the institute website is four lac seventy eight thousand.

Culture and Campus life[edit]

In order to improve the quality of life on the campus, SIMC introduced two labrador puppies - Dollar and Pound - on its Lavale campus in the year 2016[5]. This was part of the pet therapy programme introduced by Vidya Yeravdekar, Principal Director of Symbiosis Society and Pro Chancellor Symbiosis International University.

The institute also hosts a cultural programme called FestOComm which is an annual communications festival now in its eighteenth year.[6]

Crisis and Controversies[edit]

In January 2016, SIMC Pune website was hacked by a hacker who identified himself as Don 2. The hacker or the group who hacked the website may have been linked to Islamic State, the global terrorist group.[7]

Ranking[edit]

SIMC has consistently been ranked as one of the top ten media and communications institute in India by various leading news magazines which carry such survey. In 2019, Outlook magazine ranked SIMC Pune as the fourth best institute in it media and communication category in its survey[8].
