History[edit]

Composition[edit]

Gade began work on his first symphony sometime in 1841 or 1842. That Gade was working on a symphony is mentioned in a letter by Clara Schumann, who visited Gade in March of 1842, and a draft of the first three movements survives from August 1842[1]. Early sketches of the symphony appear to be based on folk songs. While the symphony may be to some degree thematically based on folk song texts, the only existing melody which is incorporated into the music is by Gade himself: Kong Valdemars Jagt, also known as På Sjølunds Fagre Sletter. This song tune, which sets a text by the contemporary poet Bernhard Severin Ingemann, is featured prominently in the first movement (see music, below).

Music[edit]

Premiere[edit]

Gade sent his symphony to the Musikforening (Music Society) of Copenhagen in the late summer of 1842, but it was rejected because it was considered unfit for their next concert, a memorial to the recently deceased C.E.F. Weyse. Looking elsewhere, he sent it to the Gewandhaus in Leipzig[2]. The music director of the Gewandhaus, Felix Mendelssohn, wrote to Gade in January 1843 saying he had just conducted the symphony and was favorably impressed. The first performance was held on March 2 of the same year.[3]
